P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Ha ha, I've had a look now. It all makes sense now. Right, I think I have all the ammunition I need, will report back when it's all sorted. First step, diagnosis to confirm it's the pump.

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Thanks again wammers, so helpfull. I've now read up on the procedure and understand what I need to do. The only thing I'm not sure about is why the intake manifold needs to come out. Haven't had a chance to look under the bonnet yet but I am guessing it's for access?

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Wammers (or anyone in the know), can you confirm for me that this kit on eBay contains everything I need? Not including the dti and dti mount of course. Thanks. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=251664077037

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Excellent, thank you for your advice. I assume the hole in the m51 block is larger than the flywheel hole as opposed to the M50 that are both the same?

Hello from new P38 owner in Moray, NE Scotland

I still have my little E30 cabrio which has just been laid up for the winter months so I'm not quite over the BMW thing yet. Your brother in law is not one of them hippys at the foundation is he? :-)

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Wammers, feel free to elaborate then! If I don't have the right tools I'd still rather buy them than pay a garage to do a job that I'm perfectly capable of and will enjoy doing. If specialist tools cost a fortune I tend to adapt something or have something made up and if I do have to buy...

Hello from new P38 owner in Moray, NE Scotland

Oh, I'm a single dad and that's my daughter. I put that pic on because I thought I'd mention that old range rovers have quite a 'cool' factor to a seven year old.

Hello from new P38 owner in Moray, NE Scotland

Hi folks. Just joined here today to see if I can get some help with some P38 gremlins. Seems a very friendly site and I reckon I'll be here a while so I'd better introduce myself. I'm James, I'm an aircraft technician in the RAF and I'm a 80's/90's BMW enthusiast! I've been through 17 cars...

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Whoa! Is that the going rate for a pump. Was going to look for a second hand tested item?

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

That's great info, thank you very much to all. Will get the pump replaced once I find a reliable one for a reasonable price, maybe get diagnostics if in feeling flush and will report back once fixed.

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Cool, I'll try that but I'm WAY up north so I'm not holding out for many people to be nearby. I might just take a risk and go straight for a fuel pump. Always handy to have a spare if it's not that. Any suggestions on sourcing a quality used and tested pump? Also is it exactly the same part for...

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Thanks for your quick replies guys. I've owned bmw's for the last 10 years and always done my own diagnostics. The diagnostics stuff for land rovers that I can find are a lot more expensive to buy though. How much should I expect to pay for a diagnosis session?

With this being an intermittent fault would it show up on diagnostics?

P38 diesel 'engine check' lamp when lifting off

Hi folks, new member here from north of Scotland looking for some help. I've recently bought a P38 diesel automatic and have been trawling the internet looking for an uncomplicated answer to an engine problem. I'm no stranger to a bit of spannering but I'm new to range rovers and their systems...
