    Freelander 1 advice

You can do a lot with the 1.8 Freelander - power, torque and offroad mods. I have enjoyed my 1.8 project with upgrades and wanting to see if a 200bhp turbo converted 1.8 can be a reliable every day car - it can! I have had it over 4 years. My theme was more (adequate) power and more offroad...

Now got a Freelander v6 as well as a 1.8 turbo converted one. Both were restoration projects. Lots of things fixed or rebuilt. Lots of videos on these on youtube channel comeinhandynow if you need something fixed!

    3.0L V6 Freelander

I am just looking over old posts on freelander v6 and found this BTCC kv6 very interesting. Have you any details on how they got to 300bhp? I have just got my freelander sport v6 2003yr on the road running nicely, and as it is a bit of a hobby /restoration project car, further upgrades would...

    V6 Sudden Power Loss

An old post, but thought I would add that I had the same loss of power when accelerating hard at 5000 rpm in my 2003yr freelander sport v6, the engine power would drop suddenly and recover when backing off to part throttle. Changed the in tank fuel pump/filter module and now all good all the...

Freelander 1 V6 Metal Thermostat housing

Thanks to dmgrs for the reinforcing idea. Interesting statistics as well. I also extended that idea by adding those paint lid retaining spring clips around the weld before adding epoxy. That weld aint moving now!

    Freelander TD4 won't rev above 2200rpm

I had the same “not revving problem”, turned out to be a crank sensor - see

    Check engine light

If your car is anything like mine, you should be fine with the new cyclone filter upgrade. A new cotton filter is also OK, but you have to remember to change them frequently. Mine was clogged originally and then pressure in the crankcase seemed to push oil into the inlet/turbo/intercooler etc...

    Freelander Faults poll

Thanks. I did check my VCU the other day and as it’s not too complicated I didn't do a video, if there is a demand I will reconsider it. As far as the test goes there seem to be plenty of descriptions on how to do it in forums. Basically put in gear jack up one rear wheel, brakes off (make...

    Freelander Faults poll

I’ve had 3 freelander 1’s a 1.8 5 door, a TD4 and now a 1.8 3 door. I’ve done a lot of fixes (see long fix with solutions below) but I would still regard them as a reliable day to day car (despite the list below! - a lot of which can be common to a lot of cars) and I still like them. A lot are...

Did the thermostat mod - still no heat

Is that Gates thermostat the same as the Renault 5 one? That’s the one I used in mine and temperature was ideal after fitting. Details of mine:

    Freelander 1 Missing and smoke

I’ve been spending a lot of time last year going through all of the causes of smoke on my td4, and just as long editing the videos to share some findings, which I’ve just finished. Eventually it ran with no smoke and I eventually managed to remove the smoke / misfire at 2500 rpm, via a bit of a...

    Freelander 1 2006 MK1td4 freelander

Thanks, it’s not big issue, but little bits of revenue add up to provide some extra motivation for spending the time doing these.

    Freelander 1 2006 MK1td4 freelander

Please don’t steal my very small amount of youtube revenue by copying this video. Although helping others is a good motivator for doing these diy videos the small amount of ad revenue also helps ( with time and other expenses). ALSO all YouTube videos are copyright, so copying not allowed. Is...

    2005 TD4 Starts But Won't Rev!

I may be able to boost the ECU signal (or maybe remove some wiring resistance) as an alternative. If the solenoid has a constant bias it won’t turn off completely.

    2005 TD4 Starts But Won't Rev!

Yep the solenoid is normally PWM from the ECU. The actuator moves all the way in or out when I manually control the voltage to the solenoid, with no sticking of the actuator. The vacuum I tested at over 30inHg vacuum which I think is enough. It is as if the ECU can’t or chooses not to drive the...

    2005 TD4 Starts But Won't Rev!

You could be right. It would be interesting to do a survey of ‘good’ td4’s and see if they smoke or not. I’ll report back on mine when I get it MOT’d so I can drive it. It’s a bit of a previously neglected project car so I few more things to fix yet. The turbo is given some activation by the...

    2005 TD4 Starts But Won't Rev!

I’ve been working through checking everything on my td4, to fix the white smoke at 2000-2500 rpm, that does indeed seem quite common going by reports. (First the video on the crank sensor I got around to, combined with glow plug testing: I found that the crank sensor has to sit with it’s...
