P38 How to remove rear wiper arm?

Thinking of removing the rear wiper arm on my P38 to de-rust and repaint it. RAVE says just lift the cap and undo the nut, but it is so tucked away under the rear spoiler that there is no clearance for that. Any tips?

    P38 heater o-rings: draining tips?

Just changing the leaky heater o-rings on my GEMS P38, as you do. Haven’t done this before, but am using Stufer’s excellent guide. When it comes to draining the heater rad, Stufer suggests a plastic sheet in the driver's footwell, and allowing the coolant to run out over the sill. But is the...

    Wiring question…

Am just wiring in a satnav/dashcam combo (Garmin 51) and also a reversing camera screen, both on the dash top centre. Seems logical (and tidy) to route the wiring behind the panel below the steering wheel. But where to access +12v and earth? Is there any easily-accessible switched power under...

    P38 4.0 GEMS 1997 - exhaust gas in coolant

Overheated when silicone rubber swarf blocked the radiator bleed pipe. Now RELD test shows exhaust gas in coolant. Radiator needs bleeding after use. No oil in coolant and no coolant in oil. This movie was taken under the car, cold engine, in my garage. Any opinions if one or more liners is...

P38 repair in general area of Cambridge - recommendations?

Looks like my P38 has a leaky head gasket that needs replacing - any suggestions of an independent specialist in the Cambridge area / East Anglia / Bedfordshire or somewhere not too far away? Thank you!

    Crit'air stickers in France...?

Can't find anything listed on the above subject. The stickers relate to the vehicle emissions, a bit like our ULEZ. I understand that "Crit'air" stickers are required in France, for driving in certain cities. Failure to display one in the lower right side of the windscreen leads to a hefty fine...

P38 4.0SE GEMS - Question ref oil filler cap

Another "interesting" event on my P38. The oil filler cap was sticky and when I managed to turn it, the adapter that connects it to the cam cover came away too. I cleaned the adapter threads and carefully screwed it back into the cam cover using the two internal ears that it has. I then cleaned...

Dumb question - P38 through carwash?

Don't want to find out the hard way that my P38 won't fit into a standard garage car wash - will it fit? Or will I lose mirrors and possibly paintwork??

P38 coolant change radiator bleed - how very LR

Just had the coolant changed on my 1997 4.0SE. They did a pretty good job getting the air out of the rad, and after a few trips I finished the job with a bit of fiddling. After the event, I found from this forum that you can easily clear that tube by squeezing the top hose with the reservoir cap...

    P38 1997 4.0SE clock bulb replacement

Clock not illuminated so I thought it best to remove and check the bulb. The manual says take off the centre console side panels and remove the whole switch panel. The clock appears to be fixed via the rear of the switch panel..?? What a pain - is there no other way to get the clock out??

    P38 Side Step replacement

My 1997 P38 has what I think are standard JLR running boards, with rubber end caps. The pipework has rusted through and I am thinking of replacing them. Rimmers have some aftermarket ones (STC8500) that look simpler but that would be a good thing. They also have some "Rock Tree sliders" which...

P38 GEMS - couple of questions on coolant change

A couple of questions when looking at the workshop manual - procedure for changing coolant: 1. The manual says remove the LH cylinder block drain plug but specifically says do not remove the RH one - why is that? 2. It doesn't say anything about draining the heater matrix - should I make sure...

    P38 Coolant - confused.com...!

1997 P38 4.0SE I thought I understood the various types of coolant... Blue/green IAT for older cars (mine currently has this colour) - change every 2-3 years. Red/pink OAT for newer cars. Never to be mixed with IAT. Lasts indefinitely. HOAT (yellow?) - not sure about this one but never used it...

    P38 4.0SE 1997 - A/C condenser info request

As usual, my P38 A/C condenser l=is leaking from the top off-side corner. I am getting our local garage to fit a new one, and am providing the parts myself. The Nissens 94257 has arrived but does not seem to have o-rings with it. Perhaps they are inside the entry pipes but I am reluctant to...

    P38 4.0 SE 1997 - Unknown item - info requested!

Just swapping my kph (Japan) speedo for an mph version, and tidying up the driver's side dash. The wiring has been hacked about a lot... The Valeo box in the photos was fixed in using cable ties. It seems to be some sort of motor, connected into the main loom, but the drive output is not...

    P38 - fitting new A/C condenser

1997 P38 4.0SE. Leak in the A/C condenser, top left corner, so am replacing it. Question: the receiver/dryer looks pretty manky (surface rust) but does not leak. I guess it is the original one. Should I replace it at the same time as I get the condenser replaced? Sound practice, or "if it ain't...

One year on - my P38 Japanese import from Specialist Cars of York

Herewith some notes on my purchase of a Japanese domestic market P38. Back in early 2021, in the depths of the Covid pandemic, I bought a 1997 4.0SE from Specialist Cars of York, for £6995 delivered. The time from payment to delivery turned out to be a full 5 months of which a little over 1...

Aah - Landyzone. In the midst of all the banter (= personal insults), sexist jokes, racist rants, there are fascinating tips and tricks. A bit like slivers of glass in a bowl of tripe. Morbid curiosity pushes me to log in regularly and read about catastrophic failures and heroic engineering...

(P38 4.0SE 1997) How to remove grille above rear window

Removed the grille and found that the foam was thick with dust and also perished - new air filter foam on order. This seems to be the interior extraction air flow so that should help keep the cabin fresher. I also fitted a retro vintage Mulberry leather tag to my number 1 key fob. Not much to do...
