    OK folks, I have cracked it! I started to inspect the wiring from the rear tailgate to the front fuse box. Removed the rear right interior panel in the boot and guess what? Near the rear seats underneath the holder for the parcel shelf, I discovered two relays - later found one is for the rear...

    Ok thanks for all the info, I guess it is back to the rear door as a first port of call.. check and clean the sensors, and the wiring as when I got the car the rear window would wind all the way down bar the last 2 inches... had the card off and notice it was snagging on the vertical wire...

    Thanks for all the replies :) Should have mentioned : It's a Freelander 1 2006 Auto Diesel TD4 In response, I can add the following.. I can rule out the fob button being pressed as this happens when I am asleep and my keys are on the table, so sure that no buttons are being pressed...
