    L-Series exhaust manifold heat-shield...

I would think sheet metal is not such a good heat shield. Maybe you could wrap the new shield with exhaust wrap, which is a glass fibre stuff?

2004 td4 rad fan on at 65c and coolant never over 80c

It is quite a job to replace the thermostat, I did it on my rover 75 but then on the freelander I made a temp fix for the winter 4 years ago tats thill going strong! A Renault 5 1.4 thermostat fits in line in the top hose and works a treat. Unlike many failed thermostats this one, from what I...

2004 td4 rad fan on at 65c and coolant never over 80c

The td4 engine is renowned as cool running and often as the thermo stat gets old and lazy the running temp drops. The fans could be due to the AC demanding cooling or maybe a sensor issue?

Winter tyres...which ones do you have?

True I'm sure it depends largely on the tread pattern and compound. The hankooks I had on last year did a super job, not saying better than a true winter tyre but very good :)

Winter tyres...which ones do you have?

So do people not find good alpine marked AT tyres ok in the snow? I have never had an issue and frequently do crazy off road attempts in the snow. I like to try to cross a specific road in weardale at least a few times each winter and only normally get stopped by depth. Maybe worth knowing...

Jack up safely and use an axel stand. Double check you tighten everything back up and you will be fine

What have you done to your Freelander today

New rear shocks (ball ache as good old LR decided that when changing the rear shocks it would be a good time to split the brake pipes where they meet the flexi! Then of course the bleed nipple was a pain!). Also fitted a new wiper motor and checked air in tyres :)

Gearbox oil change now hummng noise

Last I did this (rover 75 but same box) I got the same out as went back in. That said there is no telling it wasn't over filled in the first place I guess? I would be re checking the level and make sure you go through all the gears one by one to fill the galleries before you level check with...

    rattling ABS/Traction control unit

The sound you describe could possible just be the noise that is made during the normal working of the abs unit. I would suggest you find a garage or person with a rover test book machine and check all the sensors are working. If the lights don't come on sounds like some one has bodged it...

    First offroad attempt

Oh no doubt! I'm replacing the rear shocks at the weekend and thinking that a small 1inch lift will be fun. If I drove the car (the missus does during the week) I would go for a 2 inch lift :) I think you will be pleasantly surprised by good AT tyres so hope you are ready for more off road...
