Grinding noise from front at full lock/low speed

Just started in our TD4 MY01 - Lower wishbones and track rods have been replaced recently but been fine since. At low speeds when driving forward with full lock in either direction there's a ghastly grinding noise. When I was under it doing the wishbones the IRD looked a bit mucky and there...

Freelander 1 Tracking problems: need new track rod ends?

Great post Rob - about to do exactly the same as following replacing the lower suspension wishbone arms the tracking is now out, and of course the track rod adjusters are completely rusted up like yours. I even have an almost brand new wedgie separator that i needed for the wheel ball joint that...

    Td4 Lack of power at 70mph - fixed !

So a big thanks to kungfu0210 for this thread. Servicing the missus' 01 hippo and couldn't find the turbo vent filter anywhere. On closer inspection there's an EGR solenoid with the little black box where the filter vent pipe should be. The whole thing hanging loose and swinging around in the...

mystery screeching noise - VCU bearing? Wheel bearing?

Hi all, Mrs Y reg TD4 Hippo has started making this horrible noise when moving - doesn't seem to vary much with speed or with braking. Anyone recognise the signature of that banshee wail? My first guesses are VCU bearings or something in the wheel hub....

    lost all power steering fluid

Hi all, The Mrs' hippo's latest trick has been to suddenly dump all its power steering fluid. :( On inspection it looks like the pipe on the PAS rack on the right hand side looking into the bay has corroded and failed. Is it possible to get in and replace that pipe without having...

Freelander rear window - new regulator will not calibrate

thanks for the suggestions. Solved. I swapped out the entire motor unit from the replacement regulator with the old original one. It's a pig to get the tensioned wire/pully on to the motor but a bit of brute force managed in the end. So the sensor in the new motor must have been...

Freelander rear window - new regulator will not calibrate

could it be a duff regulator? CCU? if I connect the multiplug to the old unit and latch the door then holding the key turned in the rear door runs the motor continously which is what I would expect, when connected to the new regulator in the car it runs for half a second think I might try...

Freelander rear window - new regulator will not calibrate

Hi all, OK at wits end on this one. Mrs TD4 5dr Freelander1 rear window packed in the other day - I could hear the broken cable in the mechanism so thought - aha I know how to fix this - as per the side windows over the years and bought a new complete regulator assembly for the tailgate window...

    rear brake mystery

garfield - thanks, will give drum groove a good clean out, wire brush etc asap. mystery, no - the new pads are on the left, the old ones look like they're smaller because they had partially disintegrated leaving lots of crud in the drum. not LR original (which are hard to find!) but are a...

    rear brake mystery

i gave it a pretty good clean with brake cleaner but didn;t attack it with a wire brush or anything. where would the drum rub against? bit confused as there's no noise when not braking. I did put copper grease on the 6 contact points on the back plate and where the two leaf springs connect...

    rear brake mystery

Ok - have had a strange noise coming from the left rear brake on the missus' 01 TD4 for a while now, on braking a grating noise in time with the rotation of the wheel. so - took the drum off - rusted to within an inch of its life, lots of crud and crap. gave it all a good clean out, better...

    dead driver's side window

it's normally worth just replacing the whole window regulator unit I think for sake of 70 quid. Have had to do 3 on the missus's hippo now (both front, and one rear). the old ones were a real mess and wouldn't have fancied messing about with a new cable. incidentally if you are testing to...
