    Starting issues

If changing the starter and the wee tab then the battery all fixed the problem (albeit temporarily), my money would be on a electrical issue rather an injectors. It will be interesting to see what a Nanocom says.

    2.25 petrol rough idle

Not much relevance to LRs, but a good running out of fuel story nonetheless...was heading south on the ice roads (ice road truckers) and had only just come off the last lake back onto the all season road that runs the last 70kms into Yellowknife when I ran out of fuel. Gauge showed that I had...

    200/300TDI exhaust brake?

I think it's a great idea. They make pick-ups with exhaust brakes now so in theory it would be possible. Not sure about the stresses it would put on an engine - or how you'd find out what it would/wouldn't do to a 200Tdi for that matter. Good luck, and I too would love to hear how it goes if you...

    TD5 Turbo whistle

Mine whistles since I deleted the EGR. Was a little disconcerting at first, but I don't mind it now.

TD5 Defender fault code reader/diagnostic tool reccommendations

I've only ever used a Nancom, but I couldn't wish for anything more. Great piece of kit.

    Theft Deterrent- 300TDI 90

Feckers. Can you call yourself a true Land Roverist if you steal one from someone else?

    Theft Deterrent- 300TDI 90

I don't know if it's of much help in the UK, but here in North America where only very few people know how to drive a manual I would think that leaving the transfer box in neutral would likely be quite effective.

    Leak from underneath defender 90

Anything else to worry about in terms of reliability? How long have you got?! (But it's all part of the experience ;))

    Leak from underneath defender 90

This is an important consideration when purchasing a vehicle. Who wants to drive around in something that you feel you have to be so protective of that you can't even enjoy it?

    Leak from underneath defender 90

And I'm guessing the uninflated half is the bottom half? I'm that good that I can tell without even seeing it.

    Leak from underneath defender 90

I have a photo somewhere....in South Africa in '91 we were trying to undo a 47mm bolt on a set of discs. All the heat and persuadin' we could offer didn't budge it, so with a combination spanner the ring end went on the offending bolt and the tooth on the bucket of a JCB backhoe went into the...

    Theft Deterrent- 300TDI 90

I'm in this camp. If someone is going to break into my car and steal something (around here it would be low-lifes looking for loose change to go toward their next fix), I'd rather they didn't break a window to do it. If I leave something expensive and obvious in the car that's on me. There are...

'Short' oil filter - bad for engine?

I was just doing a price comparison for service items between the half dozen or so places I'm most familiar with and that I know will ship overseas. I also order by part number (so LPX100590 for a spin on filter), but I noticed a couple of places offered me a short filter option. I didn't look...

'Short' oil filter - bad for engine?

I suppose that would make sense that a short filter would require changing more frequently. I replace oil, both oil filters and fuel filter every 6000km (3700 miles). And agreed that the spin on filter isn't hard to get off, but I do find it difficult to get back on sometimes.

    What make filters/service parts?

What are the collective thoughts on which brands are good/bad for filters? I know that some people only use genuine parts, some others will always buy the cheapest option, and many I'm sure are somewhere in between. Here in Canada Fram oil filters are considered to be the lowest quality option...

'Short' oil filter - bad for engine?

Anyone with a Td5 will know the spin on oil filter is a little hard to get at (although admittedly it becomes easier with practice). I see that some parts places are selling service kits with 'short' filters, apparently making them easier to get on and off. Does having a filter with a smaller...

Driven: New Defender - On & Off Road. Is it a Pretender?

A company I used to work for had one as a fleet vehicle. I would drive it occasionally - I don't remember anything about it (this would have been 2000 or 2001) other than that it did attract a fair amount of attention.

    Cold weather mods and issues

For sure. Our nearest big city is Edmonton, Alberta. It's an 18 drive from here. For the first 9 of that there's pretty much nothing. You'd drive past the turning to Fort Providence (pop 618) three hours from here, then in a further two you'd pass through what's left of Enterprise. That...

Driven: New Defender - On & Off Road. Is it a Pretender?

The important thing is that we're each happy with what we drive. There are people that do things to pick-up trucks in North America that I will never understand, but if they like it that's all that matters. There will be lots of people who wouldn't want anything to do with my Defender (but I'd...

    Cold weather mods and issues

Well sometimes I do find myself asking that! I love the western Arctic though, and Yellowknife is a fantastic place. Just the right size (20,000ish) and not as remote now that we have year round road access. There are great people here, so many opportunities, the wages are higher and we pay less...
