1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Sorted it! Part ESR163 is obsolete (despite being listed as available to order on some websites...) so went a hydraulic hose place and got one made up. Somewhat over engineered but it runs great now. Back end feels much tighter too. Just the front end to do now...

Right, now I’m confused. Been to 2 local motor factors (including truck place) and neither have the pipe nor the unions! What have people done to connect the actual pipe to the end of the sedimenter? How would a nylon pipe go into the threaded hole?!

    Disco 1 200tdi not idling!

Thanks for help. Had a prod around and here’s the latest- on my project thread... https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/1992-200tdi-discovery-gradually-improving-my-daily-driver.344243/page-7

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Pad wear sensors makes sense, although the wires only went to one side! Plus I don’t think I’ve got a pad warning light..? Anyway got underneath and had a prod- found this eventually! So that’d be the pipe I caught when undoing the upper link nuts... Surprisingly enough it wasn’t leaking diesel...

Pretty sure it’s related to pipes round rear end rather than lift pump. Ran like a dream before I started messing about with back end. Going to check it out in week. Cheers!

Yeah reckon it’s entering system somewhere- think I might have knocked the sedimenter when doing rear axle. That’s where I plan to start!

    Disco 1 200tdi not idling!

About a week since I last used it. Might have mashed a fuel line. Checked Haynes and I might have messed up the fuel sedimenter- that sound right?

    Disco 1 200tdi not idling!

Just finished rebuilding rear suspension on my 200tdi Disco, put it all back together now it’s not idling properly! Runs and starts ok but when you rev it the engine slows right down and nearly stops, sometimes picks up but sometimes stalls! Makes no sense- haven’t touched anything on the...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Arse! Brakes bled, bolts torqued up and took it for a spin- not idling properly! Runs and starts ok but when you rev it the engine slows right down and nearly stops, sometimes picks up but sometimes stalls! Makes no sense- haven’t touched anything on the engine at all! Unless I disturbed...

Yep flexi pipe was fine when axle dropped to limit, checked it and was same length as one which came off.

Ah good thinking. Was looking for better things than tie wraps- can you get better clips?

Axle back on! Awaiting new bolts before I torque everything up and bleed brakes. Everything looking a lot less crusty!

Haha! Will be tomorrow when axle goes back on- luckily got 16-year-old lad to help!

New brake pipes on the axle, getting bushes pressed into A-frame tomorrow. Kind of annoyed I can’t get hold of UNF fixings quickly- all the local suppliers only have metric stuff. Any ideas if metric bolts would fit in the A-frame fixings?

Rear axle cleaned up and painted... And rear chassis area wire brushed and painted too. Was pleasantly surprised how easy the remains of the bump stops were to get off! New ones bought from Paddocks, along with new flexi brake cable and fulcrum/balljoint. Looking loads cleaner now!

Oh and weirdly enough there were wires going to the back axle with a connector, most of which were cut off! So I’m guessing maybe someone fitted an ABS axle at some point despite not having ABS?! There’s a connector under the boot floor which I had to disconnect before removing axle.

Oh no! Sure there should be something there... Ah, there it is... So anyway I totally failed to get the balljoint off, so off came the axle! It’s bloody heavy, especially with the A-frame still attached. Putting a pair of Stilsons between the axle bracket and balljoint and ****ting it with...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Lower arms back on, just need torquing up. Lots of prying needed to get the brackets lined up on the rear axle but got there in the end. Still need to get the balljoint off the axle for the upper link...

Chassis bolts off now with grinder, just that central ball joint stuck! Ground nut off but the balljoint is well and truly stuck in the axle. Smacked it with a hammer, doesn’t seem to move at all! Going to try getting a bigger fork splitter to get it out... Got the old lower arm bushes pressed...
