I would just like to say

Many years ago, during my teenage years in Somerset I was in a car with some friends one night, driving along one of those narrow country roads with high sides when all of a sudden a cow appeared on the bonnet. The car nose-dived under the weight and the cow rolled over the bonnet, broke the...

There's been a big accident in the street outside. Yes, I was one of those ghoulish people who went out and took a picture. But I did have a good check to make sure there was no one hurt first, so it wasn't in the poorest of taste. It's hit the wall, but something's dented the roof in and...

I've recently adopted one of Xylia's cast off iPhones. She has to have the latest one, of course, and I get the old ones. I'm not a mobile phone person, but it's useful to stick in the Land Rover with a PAYG sim in it in case I need to get the AA out. This one has ambitions to be more, clearly...

Meanwhile in Leicester the locals have moved beyond the miniature nitrous oxide cylinders and are buying bigger ones: 'Do not inhale' indeed. I doubt if it's been used to make whipped cream.

Not too sure about this Americanisation myself. All this raised middle finger malarkey; it's a bit like people saying 'gotten' and 'high school'. Is anybody doing a traditional British V sign version?

No I haven't ever had a Disco so haven't changed the gearbox single handed at the side of the road. I'm getting pretty nifty with the Defender box though, having taken it out and put it (or its replacement) back in a few times now. Get the version with the high capacity oil pan!

I would just like to say

Yes @Stanleysteamer, as per @Hippo's post above, I'd have thought a reconditioned gearbox is the best option. Various other bits and pieces on the car have already been renewed so you're dealing with a known vehicle rather than just buying someone else's problems and hoping for the best. It'll...

Wipers won't stop - new motor

Don't forget the wiper relay. These go wrong and can yield all sorts of weird wiper behaviour. They're more than just a relay - there's a printed circuit board inside. I don't think there were many variants of the motor mechanism - I've replaced my own and also some in freinds' Land Rovers and...

    Wipers stopped this morning.

The cable goes over the top of the gear wheels on the wiper spindles, so a push would raise them and a pull would lower them. So it may still turn out to be a broken cable.

Is the armadildo indigenous to your location perchance? They can leave a three toed impression.

Well, I did think of cutting it down to fit my core cutter drill, but it seems a shame to do so. One day when I've got a shed to put it in, I'll get a lathe. I look longingly at secondhand ones for sale. Something about the size and weight of a Colchester Student would do me nicely. But I...

Just riffing along with last night's innuendo-fest on here, I thought you might like to see that I have a large tool. A 50mm drill with a no. 4 Morse Taper. I'll be wanting to drill some big holes later this spring so seeing this advertised on Ebay was just too tempting. I don't think I've got...

Many years ago when I was a child my mother used to go around our garden with a little tin shovel and flick the dog dirt over the hedge into the road. It was usually an ex-coal shovel that had been demoted to dog dirt duties. One day she hit a passing car right in the centre of the windscreen...

    TD5 Fuel pump mystery

Another thing that's fairly quick and easy to do is check that the power to the pump is switching on when it should. There's a wire from the ECU which becomes live when the ignition is switched on that trips one of the yellow relays under the driver's seat. This allows power to go to the pump. I...

    Keep Losing Alternator belt tension

Yes, why not, if you can get it to fit. I've always thought that some sort of threaded adjuster would be better than trying to lever the components apart at the same time as trying to tighten a bolt. Some engines - especially in the US - seem to have these as standard.

    Defender Td5 intermittent engine light

Sounds a little bit like a problem I had around a year ago. The fault was a break in the wire that goes from the inertia switch to the relay under the driver's seat. When the ignition goes on, this sends power via the inertia switch that then switches on the relay which them provides power to...

Well, it all looks very jolly now but sooner or later the collection truck will come and tip him out. https://metro.co.uk/2025/01/12/body-found-landfill-two-months-search-began-man-dumped-bin-22344901/ Personally, I'm surprised he was still in the UK. A lot of refuse is shipped overseas and...
