    200 tdi cylinder wear

Thanks, I'm at the point now where I need to draw the line in terms of spending really. I think I'm going to put it back together with new rings, hone the remaining cylinders and see how it runs. With the little use it's going to have I'd rather take the chance than spend another few hundred...

    200 tdi cylinder wear

So the staining cleaned up, but there's a slight bit of pitting you can just about feel with a bare finger. I know it should be bored and lined, or oversized piston, but I'm tempted to put it back as it is and see how it runs. Edit, rings are out of spec so will be getting replaced. I'll call...

    200 tdi cylinder wear

Bearings weren't too bad but I've got replacements for them all along with camshaft bearings. So it seems a bit silly to not change the rings while I've got it all apart, but I need to draw the line somewhere as I've just bought a new house and can't keep hiding money from her 👀

    200 tdi cylinder wear

I'll have another attempt at cleaning the staining off, but it didn't seem to shift before with an oily rag. Not had rings off the pistons yet to check gap, that's a job for tomorrow. Fingers crossed I'll have a couple of honing tools to borrow tomorrow too, so if it doesn't shift with another...

    200 tdi cylinder wear

Yeah I'm surprised at the condition of the cylinders considering how bad a state it was in externally, dirt, rust, seized pulleys etc. I've got a couple of honing tools to try this weekend, might also give it a rub with some light polishing compound, or valve lapping paste?

    200 tdi cylinder wear

Will update when I've done something, it's going into a Series so won't do more than 3k miles a year, but while I'm at this point I'd rather not cut corners.

    200 tdi camshaft wear

Tool arrived today, whipped the old bearings out very easily. Turner pre-finished bearings ready to go in once the cylinders are sorted.

    200 tdi cylinder wear

I'll get some stones and give it a go first. Agreed, looks like some water has gotten in there. I bought the engine blind on a pallet so history unknown, hence stripping. Unfortunately it wasn't in as good a condition as I'd hoped.

    200 tdi cylinder wear

You think it'll need a rebore?

    200 tdi cylinder wear

Evening all, Pistons out and crank off before everything goes back together with new bearings etc, but I've now seen one cylinder has some marks inside. Doesn't feel significant and the other three are in good condition, do you think I'll get away with a hone and new rings? Looks/feels to me...

    200 tdi camshaft wear

Will order a set of bearings from Turners over the weekend, along with a camshaft bearing tool from eBay. I'll update how it goes, as an alternative to getting them done at a machine shop.

    200 tdi camshaft wear

Thanks for the reply, I did some more reading since making this post and agree it seems normal. A few others have mentioned it online, but I'll check with Turners. What started off as a quick check over and timing belt is now a full rebuild...

    200 tdi camshaft wear

Evening all, I've recently pulled the camshaft on an 200 tdi with unknown history ready to rebuild and go into my Series 3. Camshaft bearings are showing a lot of scoring so will likely need replacing, the camshaft itself seems okay generally but has a flat spot on the journal nearest the...

    Steve Parkers Ltd

Thanks, hopefully it's a minor blip until he's back from holiday then. Do you have a link to his ebay shop? I couldn't see anything on there from him.

Does anyone know what's going on with Steve Parkers website? It hasn't been live for a few days https://steveparkers.com/

    The perennial brake problems

Agree the adjusters need to properly set for a decent braking effort, but... The hydraulic pressure in the brake lines is felt equally throughout the whole system. If one shoe isn't adjusted up to the drum, that gap will be closed before any braking action is made on the opposite side. Newer...

    Strata Florida

Exactly, could have easily done an offset pull back the way it went it with a snatch block or two. Buying a winch online is incredibly easy, knowing how to properly use it and not to risk chopping your mates head off when he stands in the middle of two live ropes is slightly more involved.

Agreed, bunch of clowns with absolutely no idea of how to perform a recovery, safely or not.

    109 inch front seats

I'm not particularly tall, 5'10, but have defender seats installed and have absolutely no issues doing 5 or 6 hour journeys in the Series. Well, no issues with the seats, just the noise, speed and smell.

    All weather cover

I had a cover made up by a local materials place, the sort that does the side curtains for HGVs etc. I think it's cost around £180, it's basically a rectangular piece of heavy duty plastic with eyelets around the edges, bungee and hooks built in. It's not the prettiest but will last way...
