Anyone else out there use there Defender for work?

I use mine every day to get around as part of my work. Sometimes for towing my trailer for work related things too. A lot of the time I could use any four wheels or even a bike but where’s the fun in that. Besides which everyone knows me in my Defender.

    Breather tubes

May I jump in and ask where the breather for the rear axle is normally brought up to? My defender has a snorkel, but I understand that is more for dust than water unless the gearbox and axle breathers are extended. I've got three breathers coming up to the back of the engine, but I can't find...

    LT230 input shaft for sale.

Maybe you’re right, but rather than throw a perfectly good gear in the bin, I thought I’d offer it cheap. Perhaps someone has the machine tools to cross drill it?

    LT230 input shaft for sale.

My attempt to show that the splines are not showing any signs of wear.

    LT230 input shaft for sale.

LT230 input gear. I’s in excellent condition but ideally needs the oil holes cross drilling. However despite having no cross drilled oilway, the splines are in perfect condition. No wear ridges on the drive teeth and ready to install. It’s listed on eBay with a starting g price of a tenner...

The little plastic screw fixings for front doors

These are the screws I used and some photos showing how they fit the Christmas tree clips perfectly. Sorry to multiple post but I’m on my phone and was getting confused with the tabs. I can’t remember the drill size I used to drill pilot holes. Just be sensible is my advice. (And put some tape...

The little plastic screw fixings for front doors

Those are they. The black 'Christmas tree ones' clip over bits of plastic in the door card that go brittle and break off. The video I quoted above shows how to use some small screws to fix the problem. It worked a treat for me.

The little plastic screw fixings for front doors

Not the ones I'm referring to. The screws replace little plastic bits that are part of the door card. Here's the video that inspired me to mend mine the same way.

The little plastic screw fixings for front doors

I used some tiny countersunk self tappers that I bought from Screwfix. They worked very well. If I get a moment, I'll look for the packet/box in the workshop. I didn't have a dremmel to file the broken plastic in the door card flat so I carved the excess off with a very sharp chisel before...

The little plastic screw fixings for front doors

Some of the clips are integral to the door card and they are very brittle. There’s a trick I’ve used where you replace the plastic button with a small screw and the head of the screw is where you clip the new fastener into. (There’s a YouTube clip of the English guy who fixes Defenders in Canada...

    Series 2a at Auction

Is that engine swap a common option? I used to drive a Series but that was forty plus years ago and it was brand new! (Overdrive and freewheeling hubs and it still never did more than 22 mpg)

Windscreen wipes when I flash the headlamps

Update on the unwanted sporadic wiper operation. I bought a puller and the wheel came straight off. (I’d tried a couple if so called ‘universal pullers’ big not only did none of the bolts fit the threads in the steering wheel boss but the bolts wouldn’t have fitted the puller body either. )...

    Trailer borrowing

If you can find my trailer that was nicked from my driveway last Thursday you can borrow it... Only bought it six weeks ago too.

    Aluminium galvanic corrosion

How will you insulate the fastenings? Electrical connection plus dissimilar metals plus electrolytes equals corrosion sooner or later. Ensuring there’s no water or dampness left or trapped helps and the paint will slow things down.

    Help! Slave Cylinder Clip

I’ve used the bit of pipe/tube trick. I seem to remember using a length of thin thread to hold the plastic clip at the right angle too. I looped the thread round so I could pull it clear when the clip was seated home.

    Aluminium galvanic corrosion

I work in the marine industry some of the time so know a little about corrosion and galvanic reactions. Galvanic reaction in the context being discussed here requires two metals separated on the galvanic scale (the further the separation the greater the effect) connected together electrically...

    Annoying squeak

I’ve oiled the hinge and like magic the squeak has gone. I’ve also cured the squeaky clutch pedal by oiling the pivot on that as well. The Defender is never going to be like a modern car but it’s getting a little quieter and more civilised.
