Disco 1 300tdi lost all power while driving

And yet a daily or weekly check only takes minutes. As an army driver this would be expected daily and a quick once over gives peace of mind.

    P38A Diesel losing coolant.

Exactly, plus with the manifold removed a crack into the exhaust port or around the seats should be fairly obvious if the system is pressurised. Many years ago I had a proper testing kit with various radiator caps and a balloon like hand pump. Go steady on the pressure and don't exceed the cap...

    P38A Diesel losing coolant.

What about pressurising the header tank with a modified bottle top? At 10 miles a litre it has to be quite obvious if you look in the right place; drop the exhaust manifold off ;)

manual transmission not selecting gears when idle

How much free play is there at the clutch pedal i.e. pushing fresh air before it appears to be operating something? You did use the correct fork didn't you? Post the part numbers of the items used so someone can check or confirm for you?

manual transmission not selecting gears when idle

Clutch drag, check and adjust to suit assuming you've assembled the clutch correctly using the right parts. In effect your clutch isn't fully clearing when operated.

    Big End bearings

Many years ago I ran a temporary mechanical oil pressure gauge via a plastic flow line in one of my tdi 300s to investigate some oil issues, easily done with a nice large clock for a few test drives. Here we go for a bit of a confession..... Once upon a time, I rebuilt a 2¹/⁴ diesel with a new...

    Big End bearings

Re-reading the whole thread...... So if that's the case then you can rule out most oil related issues. Post up a pic of the main bearing shells side by side with the big ends? Has the engine been submerged or hydraulic locked at some point? Are the rods 100% perfect especially alignment? Are...

    Smoking from oil filler

Might be worth having the head pressure tested whilst it's off.

    Big End bearings

The photo suggests dirt and foreign material to me. Some passageway somewhere wasn't cleaned maybe? Plastigauge on new shells and tell us what you get?

    Quick Aux Battery Question

I'd wire it so the 2nd battery has totally separate circuits and an ignition fed relay for the charging input. That way any interior light or socket use couldn't drain the engine battery, irrespective of how long it was on, and the two batteries would run independently.

To buy or not to buy - is the chassis overpainted ?

I heard of a story where a guy received a demand for £3000. His motorhome is American and 11 ton, so classed as a commercial. He drove in to see friends, parked up for x3 days, then drove back out. £2000 bill appeared soon after with it rising to £3000 after 14 days. Save the planet my ar5e.

To buy or not to buy - is the chassis overpainted ?

Lots of gloss-over there to be wary of, a lie down underneath with a headtorch and toffee hammer may satisfy any concerns.

    New to here

The one I built, the hybrid, was a private plate 1978 RR classic, cut in half, shortened to fit a 90 body, then had a v8 3.9 fitted running a 4 sp rangey box. I installed a centre mounted pto winch so I could pull forwards or backwards. It was so much fun, spinning the wheels out of junctions...
