1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Not done very much with this at all in the last few months, mainly because I don’t think I’ve driven it further than a few miles from house! However the headlights hadn’t been working properly when switching between main and dipped beam for a while- there’s be a split second of darkness when...

Disco 1 New MOT - now for some headlight inspiration!

Ah great, I’ll do that then. Wiring already came in flex conduit as part of kit. Will post pics when done.

Disco 1 New MOT - now for some headlight inspiration!

Zombie thread alert- where’s the best place to run the cable across the front on a Disco 1? Under the radiator, or behind grille/in front of rad? Bought kit and want to wire it in right place.

Disco 1 Headlight switch connector replacement?

My main beam headlights had been playing up, sometimes working/sometimes not. Pulled the switch out and found this bodged connector! Can you get a replacement from anywhere, or does anyone have one off a breaker? Cheers!

    Wanted Original Disco 1 Radio

I have this beast in mine, the original one fitted in 1992. Not for sale but gives you an idea of what to look for. Can’t remember model number but will have a look.

    D1 200tdi origonal radio code?

I had this problem. If you have no joy with LR I think there are some services who can decode your radio if you send it to them. I was all ready to do this to get my original tape/radio working, then I noticed the original radio code had been written by hand on the inside of the cubby box lid...

Has anyone actually cured death wobble properly?

There are one or two D1s around near me, there’s an H reg 3 door and a 300tdi 3 door on the road I sometimes see, and another H reg 3 door parked in a unit which hasn’t seen the road for years nearby. The drop arm is fine on mine, tightened that up to very tight when I put reconditioned...

Has anyone actually cured death wobble properly?

As per my project thread, I’m trying to rid my Disco 200tdi of death wobble. Done lots of searching on forum, so far I’ve done... New tyres all round New balljoints New steering damper Reconditioned steering box One side swivel (passenger side as it seemed hitting bumps on this side made it...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Yeah that’s a possibility, but I think the passenger side swivel went because bits from the shattered CV joint worked their way into the bearing and killed it.

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Back from holiday in Zafira! New swivel housing came, so fitted it and did swivels. Think it seems ok- needs proper test drive to check. If it’s not Ok, where would be next port of call? It’s had all new balljoints, steering damper, Panhard rod bushes, tyres (balanced), and refurbished steering...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Haha thanks! It’s trying my patience a bit- I’ve had to borrow the father-in-law’s Zafira for the family holiday up to Yorkshire this week because of this. I was quite cross with the Disco but I’ve forgiven it a bit now I know why the swivels went.

Disco 1 Swivel housing nut torque and thread size

Doing the swivels on my Disco (see the thread https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/1992-200tdi-discovery-gradually-improving-my-daily-driver.344243/page-5) Any tips on how to torque the bolts which hold the housing into the axle? Not enough clearance to get socket on them. Also want to run...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Right, well got started onto stripping hub and swivel off today. All came off nicely, even these clag-covered bolts. Dropped the bearings out the swivels- the bottom one was mangled. Cage bust, rollers everywhere! So that’s where the play was. Thought it was odd that it was so destroyed...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Have bitten the bullet and began to change swivel, as death wobble was still there yesterday at 55mph- bloody annoying! Hopefully changing swivel on passenger side (that’s the one with the dodgy seal) will sort it...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

It’s got one-shot grease in the swivel housing. The CV is full of grease too, as I packed it when i changed the CV back in March (I think it was). Have tried removing a shim from the top swivel to remove play, but have the whole kit to fit. Will probably end up fitting it sooner or later anyway.

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

All done! Box back in place and connected, drives great now. Got a bit worried when I noticed a trail on the ground underneath where I parked it, relieved to realise this was air con dribble from previous car to park there. Acid test will be driving up to Scarborough on Friday! Got up to 65mph...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Putting back on reconditioned steering box, everything was going so well... All bolts and fittings went on fine until one of the power steering pipes wouldn’t go back in- union thread wouldn’t bite! Damn annoying! Have pulled the pipe off- reckon replacing it would be best option- here’s...

1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Put 2x rear Super Gas shocks on the back today, not too tricky. Stupid tiny nuts at bottom of shock absorbers (8mm?) which you need to hold onto to undo bottom bolt! Both were stuck! Ended up using Stilsons to hold body of shock absorber still to get bottom bolts off! Spot Merlin the cat...
