    Double d clutching

I thought heel and toe was brake and accelerator... ie a way of blipping the throttle while braking at the same time. wiki (FWIW) seems to agree: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heel-and-toe

    Workshop done over.

Yes. A PC came round and took a statement but said as there were no leads it probably would be filed. Scene of crime quizzed me over the phone but without the burglars leaving anything they wouldn’t send forensics.

No worries. We've only had our current defender for 18 months and it's better than ever atm. Enjoy yours.

Welcome to the forum. Did you mean to type 2018 Defender? Did you mean 2008?

Black Smoke and low on power

Now that I've removed the EGR, how important is it to disconnect the electrical connections from the EGR modulators? I have sealed the ends of the vacuum pipes (that I assume were connected to the modulators) and therefore I imagine they will just be puffing and panting against nothing? I...

Black Smoke and low on power

Result! In taking the old pipes out (I suspect that they were the original ones and have done over 180k miles...) I found that the pipe between intercooler and EGR was half off at the Intercooler end. It just fell off when I was taking the EGR off and by the look of it, it’s not been on and...

    Strange vibration fixed

Those are nylocks and torqued down “at the end of the scale” of my big torque wrench if I remember correctly. (162 newton meters or 120 lb ft). I just looked it up!

    Strange vibration fixed

“That’s the one?” Which one? The one in the middle, visible when you take the propshaft off? Just interested.

    Strange vibration fixed

Do you mean the single nylock nut holding the flange onto the front output shaft of the transferbox or the four nuts and bolts holding the prop shaft onto the flange? I guess either being loose would cause a problem... although if the flange falls out you’d lose your transfer box oil.

Black Smoke and low on power

Apologies if this is a regular question but I've done a search and I can't find the answer or any threads on the subject. I've picked up my Defender TD5 after a new gearbox (the old one dropped its lay shaft) was fitted plus a change of transfer box with a change to 1.2 from 1.4 ration. (I...

    Workshop done over.

I'm finding the whole 'shed or garage alarm' business very complex. I think that what I'd like is an alarm with a PIR plus detectors on the door and windows. I would like a remote fob or similar that I can put on the workshop key ring and when I'm walking over to unlock it, I can just press...

    Workshop done over.

Some of the tools are in the background of the pics I took of my rebuild of the transfer gearbox. I intentionally didn’t photograph the rack of tools as I didn’t want to advertise them being there! Unfortunately I think they could just see them through the window. We’re getting cctv and I’m...

    Workshop done over.

Came home at 1800 yesterday Went to workshop to turn heater on to make the place toasty for replacing the UV joints in the Landrover prop shafts. Noticed window open. Thought, 'That's odd'. Turned round and discovered a complete rack of Makita power tools has been nicked. They'd jemmied...

Rubber knob off back of radio

If I only had a bit the right size... Good idea though and probably easier to source. It’s quite small and the ones I’ve seen before are quite tough so not completely straightforward. Neoprene tubing might be ok? Otherwise I’ll try a local car radio installer (we haven’t got one nearby but...

Rubber knob off back of radio

The radio on my Defender is supposed to have a rubber ‘knob’ on the stud sticking out of the back of it that locates in the frame in the dash and supports the weight of the radio when it slides into its ‘cage’. On my radio the knob is missing and sometime in the past, it’s broken the panel it...

LT230 intermediate shaft bearing pre-load question

Defender TD5 2002 County Station Wagon (original factory station wagon...) It's a bit posh as it's got electric windows and air con.

LT230 intermediate shaft bearing pre-load question

I'll have a look. It's not essential (as I mentioned before) but for the sake of a connector or a couple of lucar spade terminals crimped on and a bulb fitted at the other end, it's worth it IMHO.

LT230 intermediate shaft bearing pre-load question

Thanks. Does that mean there’s s space for a bulb in the instrument cluster?

LT230 intermediate shaft bearing pre-load question

The finished article. I'm sorry that I didn't take any pictures of me pre-loading the intermediate shaft. I ended up using the string and spring balance technique, although I still have doubts as to how accurate I got it. I took all the end play out of the intermediate shaft and then by the...

LT230 intermediate shaft bearing pre-load question

Some more photos New input gear (cross drilled) to replace the old one that wasn't cross drilled... Driving the new gears on the input shaft using the inner of one of the old bearings and a bit of hardwood and a soft faced hammer. The book says use a press, but they went on without too...
