hello.... I'm new. And I have my first question!

Some sort of electrical meter (a cheap Digital Multi Meter) is certainly very helpful. If you're really impecunious, a 12 volt bulb and two bits of wire will reveal a lot.

hello.... I'm new. And I have my first question!

In that case I suggest you DON’T tap into the wires feeding power to your radio. You either need the auxiliary feed supply off tgd ignition switch or the switched supply off the ignition switch. The advantage of using the ‘proper’ auxiliary feed is that your antenna will be live as soon as you...

hello.... I'm new. And I have my first question!

OK. No Problem. Some simple/straightforward questions. (hopefully) Can you turn the radio on regardless as to whether you have the ignition key in the ignition? Or does the key have to the in the ignition and turned to 'position 1' for the radio to work?

hello.... I'm new. And I have my first question!

You need to power the aerial off a switched ignition feed. The radio should be fed off the auxiliary switched feed from the ignition (it’s prewired to the multi-way block in the dash where the radio fits in my Defender so I don’t need to hunt for it). I’m not sure if that applies to all...

    Undoing Shock absorber nuts

The angle grinder was brought out and new BOGE oil filled shocks fitted with poly bushes on the bottom end. I hadn’t realised that the 19mm nuts for the end of the damper and the stud on the chassis mount had different threads (one is coarser than the other; one metric one af?). On the first...

    Undoing Shock absorber nuts

I've just bought some new shock absorbers. My local Landy specialist (independent) dealer persuaded me that BOGE oil filled would be fine for my purposes. (No raised suspension, mostly road use with the occasional off road use for shooting and fetching logs etc)

    Annoying squeak

I've been chasing down the rattles in my Defender. I know that I won't sort of all them, but she's already a LOT quieter than before. However... I've got an annoying squeak that appears to be coming from behind the instrument cluster - or somewhere? It's on bumps in the road and it's a high...

    Undoing Shock absorber nuts

Has anyone got any tips before I take the angle grinder with cutting disc to the wretched things? All I want to do is change the bushes at the bottom of the rear shocks and I can't move the nuts. There's a piddly little flat on the end of the thread that I have cleaned up and can 'just' get a...

    Defender slave cylinder

I managed to replace it by getting a tube that fitted over the push rod and pushed the plastic clip back over the clutch release arm. It was a bit of a fiddle, but I managed it after a while. Very satisfying when it clicked back into place. The challenge is making sure that the 'fork' in the...

    Land Rover radio question.

That makes perfect sense although goodness only knows why as scanning through every 100 kHz is not difficult at all. (I suppose if their preferred channel spacing only allocated station frequencies at even numbers then what’s the point of scanning the odd ones and it speeds the scan up. ). Thank...

    Land Rover radio question.

PS: I appreciate that I don’t need a radio badged “Landrover” but if I can pick one up cheap I’m happy to make my Defender look original. (And replace the aftermarket cheap and nasty radio with no CD player that keeps fading out for two seconds before cutting back in...)

    Land Rover radio question.

Does anyone know the detail of the differences between a “Landrover radio for the US market” and one that was OEM UK? Reading between the lines of the various adverts for radios it seems that the UK ones get Long Wave and the US ones don’t. FM band is the same (or near enough?) One advert on...

Braking loss on laid up series landrover.

If it’s been sitting there a while then the leak might be very slow and not immediately apparent? You didn’t bleed any if the brake cylinder?

Braking loss on laid up series landrover.

Perhaps you pumped brake fluid through against the air pocket in the system and then when you stopped, the air pressure pushed it back into the master cylinder reservoir?

Windscreen wipes when I flash the headlamps

I was hitting the nut on the head, but that was me so I gave up the headache inducing whacking and I tried all the styles of whacking (ooh err) including your suggestion but to no avail.

Windscreen wipes when I flash the headlamps

That’s confused me as I’ve been winding pressure onto taper joints etc and then giving them a clout to shock them apart for years. I’ve not heard of a Boomslang harness. I must go and google. Had you tried replacing any of the switches and stalks?

Windscreen wipes when I flash the headlamps

Regarding the steering wheel: I've tried the big pull while whacking the end of the nut with a soft faced hammer and nothing. A Landrover garage said, "Oh they come off easily with a bit of a pull..." Five minutes of grunting and heaving and he admitted defeat as well...

Windscreen wipes when I flash the headlamps

As per the title. It doesn’t do it all the time, but occasionally the windscreen wipers do a single sweep and park again when I flash the lights on the lighting stalk. At the moment I can’t get the steering wheel off (I need a puller as it’s REALLY jambed on tight!) so I can’t get at the...

Black Smoke and low on power

Hmm... Not what I’ve heard from my local Land Rover specialist? Perhaps others will comment?

Black Smoke and low on power

Latest result: It's doing well over 30 mpg. A revelation for this Defender. I'd heard about such economy figures but I haven't exactly been light footed the last few miles so it's a delight to report that the economy has been transformed along with the performance. Motorways and Dual...
