    Top speed from Series 3?

Is that with overdrive? I’d imagine a diesel would have run out of puff by then. What tyres?

    Top speed from Series 3?

Will have to find a private road once I get the taller tyres on and roof off!

    Top speed from Series 3?

TLDR: 2.25 petrol, Weber carb, Fairey OD & 205/16 tyres 70MPH GPS whilst fully loaded Time to revive a 10 year old thread… again! I’ve clocked 5k miles in my series since the start of April, most of it motorway runs from Norfolk-London-Cardiff and back. Without OD I would sit at about 48 on...

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

I do wonder about that - had to slow it down to get it to warm up fully. I’ve got a new one I’ll switch in my other one to see if that makes a difference - I the thermostat seems to not be overly ‘responsive’ to big changes in speed/temp etc. Possibly a combination of that plus the rad.

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

To be fair to it ran it down to London from Norfolk last night at 60-65 (my poor overdrive…) and with the heater on (in my genius I decided to remove the door top in wales whilst leaving the studs in situ) and it struggled to reach full operating temp!

On the ribs? You mean the front grille bit?

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

Yes checked it earlier and won’t turn when off so not slipping

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

I fully approve of this logic and is pretty much what I’ve done - I have a new thermostat as well as a new one already in there, and rad has been flushed. Temp gauge is accurate, and on non motorway runs temp stays still. I’m thinking (maybe?) it’s normal - I do tend to run it at 60 on the...

    1.003 or 1.211 ?

Ah, perhaps stick to the 1.2 - I’ll admit that off boost on the steeper hills in wales it struggled in 1st! I’m going to try and turn the off boost fuelling up when I have a chance

    1.003 or 1.211 ?

I’d seen a few of those boxes about and wasn’t sure if they’d fit the 300tdi

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

I have a new stat in there and at speed keeps steady temp - I do wonder about the rad efficiency. Given it’s not doing anything hard for the rest of summer this might be a ‘kick it into the long grass’ moment - only really noticing at the moment as using it for a house move from London to Norfolk

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

Gauge seems to be accurate - we checked with IR thermometer when it was running hot before. I do wonder if this is the way forwards - it would really be the occasional heavy duty low range use or when I occasionally have to drive it into London (M11 race track to north circular standstill)

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

Belt does seem to be turning at good speed with ignition on (I have the shroud so a bit of a pain but will check properly)

    1.003 or 1.211 ?

Has anyone got any further experience on a 1.003 transfer box? I’ve got a 300TDI which I heavily suspect has been breathed on - I’ve had it up to 85 on the GPS on 235/85 AT’s and not far on slightly larger muds - 285/75’s I think. I’m planning on using it for commuting so wouldn’t mind some...

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

110 fan is a manual fan switch (meant with fan on, it runs cooler at low speeds than motorway despite the motorway speed airflow) S3 fan is fixed

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

My reasoning with the electric fan is that it would spin faster at idle than the standard one? On my 110 which has a kenlowe it runs cooler at slow/idle than at speed! Can’t say I know about the radiator - I’ll admit hoping I don’t have to bite that bullet. The belt seems in good condition.

Series 3 Overheat after motorway run

Hi all, Touched on this before but would love some further advice I’ve got a 1982 S3 SWB, running a Weber carb. On a run the temp is fine, but when I slow down (eg motorway exit to traffic) it gets hot - about 3/4 on the gauge). It doesn’t really come down until I get some decent speed (30MPH)...

    Gatescarth

Events, dear boy, events..,. Sadly didn’t end up doing it in the end - in part due to my gearstick snapping off the day before and some other stuff. Will have another crack one day as will be going to the lakes on a regular basis

    Clutch noise

Had all the oils changed on it as figured it was going to need it after that! Oil still seeping through the free wheeling hubs so clearly not too thick

    Clutch noise

Top of tyres, no plug (thought it was shallow…) and yes was trying to get out. That starts to make sense now - there was enough noice from all the other sodden oils that I probably didn’t notice it. Does anyone have any experience of how much it tends to cost to fix it?
