It was starting and running fine in the morning but when I went to start it in the afternoon we encountered the aforementioned problem. So you reckon it could be the ignition switch rather than the coil?

Apologies for this question from a non mechanical person but I am having issues with my Series III. The landy starts but when I release the ignition key the engine cuts out. If I hold the key on, the engine will run and can be revved but as soon as key is released the engine dies. I'm thinking...

Mine was a dawdle to fix. Drill out the rivet and use self tapping screws to screw back into position, thereby allowing easier replacement. New catches are readily available from the usual suspects

I used 'Copy and Paste' once I'd opened my pics in my usual software. I did however have to resize them (made them smaller for 'email and internet') before actioning 'Copy and Paste'

Took my starter motor to ES Alternators in Kirkintilloch and they fixed it in jig time!! Great service at a very reasonable price. So now the ORIGINAL starter motor in back in place and functioning well. I would certainly recommend ES Alternators

miktdish, thanks for your very kind offer, however I have been given a recommendation by a local mechanic who suggested ES Alternators in Kirkintilloch, which is a little closer to home. Tried those screws again and they are not budging a millimeter ---- let alone an inch.

Yeah I believe it can be done ---- if you have the equipment. Have watched YouTube vids of someone reconditioning but I have neither the tools nor the expertise to carry out at home. Also I did try to get the screws off and they are a real bugger to shift and I don't want to end up stripping them.

It's not turning. Checked all connections and it's getting power from solenoid but nothing happens with the starter motor.

Copy and paste the pic should work but you may have to resize the pics. I had same issue trying to upload pics but once I'd resized to a size 'best for websites' (I can't remember what that was) i managed to upload by 'copy and paste'

My S3 is also 1980 and it too has a light green painted engine (which is original), it also has the much heavier bumpers putting those 2 together it was thus suggested that it was ex military but on further research it was found not to be. Perhpas they had a few engines and parts lying about...
