You're right! Quite a good trick is to use a little bit of 16th welding wire (or anything else suitable) to hold the lift pump lever UP. which stops the fuel from pumping. Engine might start but it's going to die in seconds, like in the middle of the road causing an obstruction . . .

Sure did, and the pump on the bench in the photo came from a Massey-Ferguson tractor. I cleaned it all up, and re-assembled it, but when the man wasn't looking I did a little extra to it. I adjusted the MAXIMUM FUEL delivery UP a tad. Not the revs, which were left alone at about 2,200 rpm...
