    help advice for sickly disco

Yes, agreed on all that. There are nylon mesh screen filters in TD5 fuel pumps and they can get choked up. I changed my pump at about 60k miles and as there was nothing to lose I opened up the old one - the screen filters were practically choked with black mess. I cleaned it all out, and...

Shredded timing belt 2002 Freelander KV6 - need help

QUOTE OF THE MONTH: "I remember telling it if it wanted to live it had to fix itself." *************************************************** Excellent Strategy! I will remember that one!

Shredded timing belt 2002 Freelander KV6 - need help

My God! It worked! I think all the workings are there to be seen. I have added this pic (hey am I getting good at this or what?) to show the little hole in the main body of the follower outer part through which the engine oil fills it up. For the oil to get IN, the air inside has to get...

Shredded timing belt 2002 Freelander KV6 - need help

Well here goes for a pic! This SHOULD be two pics in one. The top is the whole thing in one piece, the lower should be it in two parts, one fitting into the other a bit like a telescope. In this one the flat end (left) runs on the cam-lobe and the rounded end fits into a rocker-arm socket...

That is a sweeping generalisation and is almost certainly not correct. However, the modern tendency is towards using hydraulic followers.

Shredded timing belt 2002 Freelander KV6 - need help

Yes, that is what happens. It can make a terrible noise, and most drivers would switch off and send for help! With all multi-cylinder engines it is inevitable that some of the valves are held open when the engine is stopped. This means some of the followers are under full valve spring...

    help advice for sickly disco

Let's leave the members to form their opinions on that, James dear boy. Very Best Wishes for 2012 James, and if you will notify me of an address of your parents' home (I assume you still stay with Mummy and Daddy) I might send you a book on basic English Grammar for beginners.

When he first stopped over here the sheep cleared off. I thought it was because they were scared of his dog. He told me he didn't have the dog last time he said he was coming to stop over, and I was looking forward to seeing if the sheep ran away when he arrived. I might have been wrongly...

Shredded timing belt 2002 Freelander KV6 - need help

Hey, great stuff! I loved that diagram of the Hippo's V6 motor. That alone would put me off ever having one. Someone DESIGNED that and thought he was being clever! Does that V6 have hydraulic tappets? Some of them take ages to pump up and make a BAD NOISE while they do it.

Yes, he has stayed here a couple of times on his travels, and told me that. The fact these engines can mangle and buckle conrods and pushrods, and be fixed good as new in no time is a testament to their excellent tough design. Ask LRJack about his brake pipe on a recent trip from here to his...

    Hertfordshire Lanes?????

I use a GAS soldering iron on cars usually, lots of heat (or turn it down) and no mains cable. They are very good tools, and well worth the little they cost.

Yes of course James, you dear boy, you will know best, as you always do. You are the most wonderful fellow, and a joy to take advice from. But, reading that carefully, just what are you saying or advising? Everything up to "...rocker box and" is irrelevant drivel, and no-one ever...

You might need to give Hippo a prod to wake him up as this is an old thread. Maybe even a PM ?

    help advice for sickly disco

You don't NEED to do any such thing and even a brand new harness is practically certain to do it again but probably not as soon. It's a TD5 and they leak oil down the injector loom. Live with it. It takes ten minutes every month or three to clean it out. So ? I suggest you do NOT use...

    Nooooooooo

Yes, but the exhaust valves opens only as the piston is on the way DOWN and nearly at bottom dead centre, by which time the cylinder with the water in it MUST have gone over compression and tried to fire. I really REALLY want to know what is making that horrible noise! I think it sounds...

    Nooooooooo

Hi Redhand, It almost defies logic, but I too have heard of a few engines doing that after drinking water. All the same, it's making a Hell of a horrible noise. Fingers crossed for the easy final solution.

The "ROD" that usually gets bent when you suck in water is a CON ROD, the connecting rod twixt piston and crankshaft. It depends just how the bend takes shape what then happens, but a bent con-rod is NEVER good! It is POSSIBLE but highly unlikely that a PUSHROD takes a bend because of...

I use Servisol Super 10. But that's only because I always have, and it works on switches and connectors. As far as the red PLUG goes, A little petrol would do no harm, but I would NOT use that on the ECU socket in case it helps the oil to penetrate into the ECU. As long as you have access...

    Nooooooooo

Don't jump to that conclusion too soon. It may not be that. Good if it is though. I wish I had seen this thread sooner, because there was a lot of hasty diagnosis going on, and conclusions being jumped to. Whatever that noise was, big ends it was not, and not much like mains either...

    help advice for sickly disco

There are probably two main causes of this sort of problem in a TD5. In both cases, diagnostic tools will NOT detect the faults, which I suggest are: 1. OIL from the engine getting into the harness, and reaching the ECU plug-socket interface. It does NOT need to enter the ECU to cause the...
