A good pair of spanners is very convincing :) My problem was more the water getting in than the gas leaking out. I actually think the tank might still be fixable, but there was so much crap inside that I decided to just part with it for good. If anyone is interested, he/she is welcome to pick it...

The problem is that the missing connection is to the fuel pickup - otherwise it would indeed be an elegant solution. The tank is now installed, and I am waiting for the new sender/pickup... For now I just have the old pipe stuck through the rubber piece that was sealing the hole for the sender...

Thanks. I guess you are right and I need to replace the sender - am I correct in assuming that the fuel level indicator in the dash does not care what sender is attached?

I have 235/85, for all I know... I was thinking the same, but I dont know if there is a modification with the speedo drive to make it work with smaller wheels, nor why they would have installed that. (It is a 1974 6-cyl, btw)

OK... This has been a long wait. Shipment with spare parts took forever, then bad weather and busy work. Anyway - I got everything back together. New head gasket, piston heads cleaned, valves superficially cleaned (I did not remove them entirely), new distributor, some rubber replaced as well...

What is interesting about this motor? Are these rare? I admit that I was somewhat surprised to only find the inlet valves in the cylinder head, while the exhaust valves are mounted on the side - but maybe that is nothing exceptional

OK, thanks. Glad to hear that I dont need to remove any valves! Plan of action now is to replace the distributor and check/replace some more rubber. On a side note - is it reasonable to keep a old head gasket, if it looks OK (not for this time, but maybe in the future...)?

:) I did find the replies very useful! Given that I had played with the carb before the power loss started, I first suspected that. But by now I am pretty sure you are right in guessing ignition (see my last post in that thread).

I believe I found the issue - the little rubber tube on the connector of the pipe that connects the carb to the vacuum advance mechanism on the distributor was brittle (and actually broke, see below). I am assuming it was leaking really badly, so the ignition timing probably was completely off...
