P38 '97 2.5 manual diesel DSE BECM fault

This is awesome, only problem is, I'm still learning, so, a few questions. 1. When using a multi-meter on vehicles, what is the correct sockets (ports, plugs?) of the three to put the black and red leads into, I know for the sleep tests when putting the meter between the earth lead and the...

P38 '97 2.5 manual diesel DSE BECM fault

I've put a remote power cut-off into the RF cct so that I can use a second fob to shut down the RF unit after locking it.

P38 '97 2.5 manual diesel DSE BECM fault

Had a battery drain issue, as regular readers of the forum will know. Well, although I'm no expert after loads of research and testing, it looks like the BECM is not going to sleep, so, whats the next step? New (2nd hand) BECM (and keys?)? Send BECM away for a spanking (I mean, to get fixed)...

    P38, feeling smug!

Well, although I'm no expert after loads of research and testing, it looks like the BECM is nor going to sleep, so, whats the next step? New (2nd hand) BECM (and keys?)? Send BECM away for a spanking (I mean, to get fixed)? Find a friendly helpful P38 owner with a Nanocom who can sort it? I'm...

    P38, feeling smug!

The motors worked when I got the vehicle, then stopped, I swapped the relays around and they worked again and then stopped. I'm going to pick up some new relays and see if that makes a difference, although I did strip them down and test them and they seemed ok. The radio lights up, but doesn't...

    P38, feeling smug!

Well, my joy at fixing my battery drain fault was short lived, whilst it is better, it still getting drained after 3 or 4 days, so its back to the drawing board, time to get the multimeter out and pull fuses.

    P38, feeling smug!

Its far from a bad vehicle, and it runs sweet as a nut, there's no major faults (two failed blower motors isn't major, is it?) and I've wanted one for over 20 years. I've taken it greenlaning, and going on a play'n'play next weekend, and the wife loves it too, even though she won't admit it lol.

    P38, feeling smug!

So, as a newbie to owning any 4x4, let alone a Range Rover (in this case a '97 2.5 diesel DSE manual on air), and having only a limited experience/knowledge of all things mechanical, I guess I bought it with a little of the old "rose tinted" view.. how hard can it be, right? Well, quietly proud...

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

Yup, all sorted, seems the guy at that end of things put the pipes into the stabilising bracket and tightened it before trying to tighten the holding clamp under the oil filter housing, meaning the pipes wern't sat perfectly flush, and thus leaked... lesson learned.

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

Yeah, still getting to grips with the techno lingo, I mean a 10mm head I think. Its the bolt that was in-situ, so no danger of me swapping it for a wrong one.

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

When you put the new oil cooler on, the pipe ends that go into the oil filter housing, are they push fit with an O ring on each and held in with a clamp with a 10 mm bolt, or is there something else that should be here too?

Where is the "How to..." section located?

Just that really. I'm looking to download the RAVE pack onto my desktop, got it on disc somewhere and sods law I cant find it where it should be, so I'll download it so I always got it handy.

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

Dude, I paid £800 for the vehicle, and I can barely afford to put half a tank of fuel in it sometimes !!! The reason for doing it myself with 2nd hand parts is to keep the costs down, or I might as well sell it and buy a ... I can hardly bring myself to say it... a normal car.!

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

You cant just fit pipes, when you take them off an old cooler the threads get trashed, in their infinite wisdom LR decided to fit steel (pipe ends) and aluminium (cooler) fittings together, and over time they chemically "weld" themselves together. I did ask when I first found out about the...

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

I had the grill off, (and the bonnet slam cross member, and a few other bits) the two fans and water radiator are in the way, the cooler I want is behind and at the bottom of that, below something that is probably the gearbox cooler?

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

I have a 2nd hand cooler with pipes attached... as for bumper off or on... given my limited knowledge and basic tools, its looking like bumper off lol

P38, 2.5 DSE '97 oil cooler.. big job?

Tackling this today, any advice.. or a link to an idiots guide (me being the idiot!). First question... have all of the fans, rads etc got to come out individually, or can they come out in one go together? Does the bumper have to come off for access to a couple of the nuts?

Awesome... ok, do me a favour, find me a 110 that I can use daily for £800, that has an 11 month MOT, heated seats, does between 27-45 MPG depending on how its driven, leather seats, sets 5 in comfort and can cut through traffic at 90 mph lol
