    series landrover

I'd advise trying one first, I love mine but it is rather agricultural. Mine is a petrol and it is still rather noisy. As far as upgrades go check out this page: Enhancements for older Land Rovers - Glencoyne 4x4 (Thetford) Basically everything can be upgraded but a defender heater tops the...

Under floor cross member replacement s3

It depends which one needs replacement. It's usually the rear most unit that goes rotten and I've replaced insitu. I used an old inner tube to keep floor and cross members apart. I also had it galvanised before I slipped it in! FYI LR Series would be cheaper as would Paddocks or Island4x4 among...

Weber 32/34 DMTL Twin Choke Carb

My 1982 SWB Series is having a birthday! I have a new 1:9 head converted to unleaded to go on and attached to this is a Weber 32/34 carb. An extensive web search has covered most aspects but I'm still unsure about the fuel return line. Do I need to braze a return connection to the fuel tank or...

    Transfer box rear output bearing

I'm just catching up on a few little jobs on my 1982 2.25 Petrol Series 3. At MOT time the inspector pointed out some movement in the rear output bearing. The handbrake drum can me moved around 2-3mm max from side to side. I've removed the drum and the castle nut and there is a small amount of...

    More miles per gallon

Mine does around 23mpg on a long run at a steady 56-60. If you have a SWB consider changing upto 7.50 LWB wheels (but change the speedo as well!) Pre Overdrive it was around 20mpg. (5MB motor, weber carb, std dizzy, FWH). I've since changed to an electronic distributor supplied by Simonbbc which...

    Child Seats/Belts/Bench Seats

I had a similar problem, and a former wife who was keen to point out the safety hazards. I bought a full set of inertial reels inc three point set for the middle seat. Not that expensive at around £100 (for the front seats) and not too hard to fit!

What to do - Restore or update & modify

I have to say my 2.25 Petrol is not that bad on fuel, around 22-23mpg, there are a few mods like electronic ignition, overdrive, electric fan etc which help economy without loosing originality or character.

What to do - Restore or update & modify

I've taken the middle road, defender heater, heated screens etc but kept the engine, gearbox, etc standard cos as has been pointed out, if I wanted a defender I should have bought one!

    Oil Advice

Around 8 litres if changing air filter bath and filter as well. Plus 7.5 litres of EP90 for diffs, transfer and gearbox. I also went wild and bought some molyslip to nurse the old gears along...esp the O/D!! These chaps seemed reasonable and supersonic delivery!! http://www.crewchiefspitstop.com/

series 2 oil filter housing conversion?

Sounds relatively reasonable.. a new LR unit is rather eye watering even from LR series (and their prices are good...and so is there service)

    Oil Advice

Have a peek at page 35 of this http://www.legionlandrover.com/manuales/workshop%20manual%20-%20introduction,%20specs,%20general%20maintenance.pdf the answer is you need lots of EP90 and 20/50 or 10/40 (asda have Mobil semi synthetic at £3 a litre...I've just changed mine...and I'll tell you now...

Series 3 Handbrake/transmission brake return spring...where does it mount?

I've had the gearbox out to deal with it's incontinence issues but I can't remember where the brake return spring tab bolts on to. Its a SWB series 3 1982. The spring connects the handbrake to.....any ideas!! I have a large 'washer' with a hole that it connects to and a bolt but no evident...

    Out of hibernation

I'm in the process of loving an 88 back to life, well it was alive just needed a 'few jobs'!! Firstly wash it thoughly by hand, inside wheel wells etc with a pressure washer if req, it's a great way of doing a thorough 'primary survey' If it is on it's original chassis I suspect it will be...

Looking up old Land Rover, how can I tell if it's still on the road?

When we were lads my Dad had a 109 safari. I seem to recall there is a way of looking up when vehicles were last taxed. I think it was mentioned once in LRO mag but I can't remember which one!! Anyone else remember? Thanks!
