Defender 90 2.5 TD drinking oil

Fair size job, yes but can be done without removing engine, as long as bores arenta badly worn. Just need to remove sump and head, although after doing that, you may as well remove the entire lump. If the bores are badly worn, will need block reboring. Check out Turners website for piston...

Defender 90 2.5 TD drinking oil

I guess if it's not leaking, could be valve guides but with a 19j engine, more often than not it's pistons/rings. Can also be Turbo. Is there much smoke under load?

Getting back on with my project again. Should I paint galv chassis. Opinions please?

My old 200TDI was the same grey as yours. It's my favourite colour for a landy and there aren't that many about.

    2.5 petrol to 19j Conversion.....

I don't agree. It will be a long time before diesel is dead. Sure, road tax and fuel costs will increase and we will be penalised so much for using them in cities that people will find other means of propulsion, however, I cannot see diesels disappearing any time soon in the rural communities or...

I would just like to say

Back to normal Uk summer temperatures at last. Means I can rub down and prime my chassis without dripping sweat everywhere and causing instant rust!

Getting back on with my project again. Should I paint galv chassis. Opinions please?

I've always preferred the original style black finish personally. As most galvanized chassis are not stamped with a chassis number, this makes them a very easy (and obvious) target for ringing. Don't forget to etch the surface with T-wash and prime before painting.

    Any Dorset Defenders?

I was going to say give me a shout if you are up for a run out, but I have just removed my engine and will be fitting a V8 this autumn/winter so will be Landy less for a while!

    Rear antiroll bar kit

Well some will swear by them I'm sure but mine just squeeked unless it was raining. I think there must be varying quality parts, but fundamentaly, Landover must have spent a lot of time developing the original suspension components, so that's what I am sticking with. Only My humble opinion of...

Replacing benches with individual inward facing seats.

The forward facing seats seem really overpriced for what they are. OEM are better, but again, silly money for what you get. I know what you mean with reference to high expectations. I looked at so many dogs before I bought my '89 and even that needed a rear crossover. Whatever you do, make...

    1st Landy & bulkhead issue

Make sure he doesn't just plate over the bulkhead rot with the plates. The rot should be all cut out before the panels are welded on, otherwise you will be doing it all again in a few years time.

    Drum brake squeal

I suffer similar....and mine are Mintex too!

    Crap Brakes early 90

Yes, mine are correct with nipple at top. Btw, bleeding was a right side in my case, but got there in the end. Sorry Davemack, didn't mean to hijack your thread!

    Rear antiroll bar kit

I know quite a few people who regret fitting poly bushes to roadgoing Landys. They are easy to fit, but can be harsh and noisy. I am in the process of changing all of mine for OEM types.

Replacing benches with individual inward facing seats.

It may be worthwhile considering the safety aspects of inwards facing seats. I took mine out as I didn't want to seat the kids in them. If inwards facing, seat belts, lap or 3-point don't help much in the event of an accident.

    Crap Brakes early 90

Interesting comments @flat. Yes, the shoes are fitted correctly, with springs installed as they should be as well as leading edge in the correct place. I have Mintex pads front and same for shoes in the rear. Not the best friction material, but not bad either. If I pump the pedal a few times...

LT230 new diff gears feel rough

Got that James (although it still feels slightly wrong!). Thanks again for your direction with this.

    Crap Brakes early 90

I have fully rebuilt my 90 brakes with new master cylinder, new calipers, pipies, flexis, shoes and wheel cylinders and 250 miles later, despite being correctly adjusted, their performance is still lack lustre. I'm planning on fitting a disco axle with discs. I care not for originality if the...

LT230 new diff gears feel rough

Well I went through the shimming procedure as defined in the workshop manual and it turned out that I needed 1.35 mm shims. This is quite a lot thicker than the 1.05 mm shims included in the Ashcrofts kit. I mention this because it's probably worth checking properly if you do one of these boxes...

    Any Dorset Defenders?

Hi MungoPark.! Thanks for replying. I'm generally OK with mechanical stuff, but might need pulling of 'The Plane' from time to time!!! Do you use it at all?

    Bumper bolts sheared

Three of mine sheared too when I attempted to remove them. Luckily, they sheared just near the captive nut so I was able to extract them through the cutaways in the rails. I dumped load of waxoyl and used stainless bolts with Copperslip when re-installing. Sorry, that doesn't help you much though!
