Safari tailgate chequer panel fix. Pop riveter, rivet size query.

I have decided to cover the ropey looking lower part of my rear door with a 2mm chequer plate panel. Can anyone recommend a not too expensive hand riveter and advise me of the size of rivets I'll need? I doubt that I'm alone in doing this, and am clearly inexperienced, so any guidance I receive...

    Grenadier story update

One thing it will not have is brand heritage. I often wonder why we all are so enthusiastic about our vehicles. In my case it iwas a very basic, practical working vehicle that I became rather fond of but people come to own them for many different reasons and perhaps their developmental history...

Freelander 1 Should I Keep My Freelander For My Son?

What does your son think about it? You've a good, capable vehicle, never raced or rallied and one careful owner etc. What's there not to like? If it breaks its not the end of the world and you can get him something else, and I can already hear chants from this crowd of "Defender...

    Defender Temperature Gauge

Sorry jonlad, I addressed my post to yo by mistake. I should, of course, typed Defender 91

    Defender Temperature Gauge

Hi Jon, Mine registered hot intermittently for ages and never felt particularly so. Eventually, I tracked the problem to the Earth lead from the sump to the chassis. It looked in place but when I tried it, was loose and did not provide constant contact. I suggest you investigate that; rule out...

    What is this ominous bolt?

Cancel that. Didn't see your picture!

    What is this ominous bolt?

Look at the brackets securing the body to the rear cross member. Mine has similar fixings to the one you describe. Last time I counted there were 10! Good luck!

Very interesting Hippo. You've almost turned me!

    I think its a "ringer"

I am sure I don't need to say this but I must add to my earlier post that under no circumstances should you contemplate selling it on, other than to a scrapper. To do so would place you on the same level as the person you bought it from. Best wishes.

    I think its a "ringer"

There is no mileage in dwelling on your plight. You came to own this vehicle in good faith and, as Mr Imp says, after making reasonable enquiries. I guess in your position I would shut up and keep drinking. Whatever course you decide upon, I wish you well.

How to top up transfer box without a pump

Buy a small EP 80/90 bottle with its flexible filling tube from your local service station and hang on to it. I've had mine for years and I just decant from my 5 litre container when needed, and needed it will be, for your axles. I do the same with ATF fluid having retained my original Dextron...

    Bubbly defender rear door

Thanks Lightning, Sounds a good way forward. I'll look into that too. I've not had a problem with Britpart either.

    Bubbly defender rear door

lynall, Thanks for your guidance. I'll look at that with interest. You are so right about rust. I've been tying to batter it into a coma ever since I bought mine. Thanks again.

    Bubbly defender rear door

Thanks for that Jon (Jonmlb748) you have confirmed my worst suspicions of the fill and cover plan. I shall still attack the areas and see where to go from wherever it takes me, and will look at all options then. I may well follow your course. Sorry to learn of the return of bubbling to your...

    Bubbly defender rear door

Tottot, Thanks for your advice. That is certainly the most elegant solution. I've worked on the frame a while back and it is now rot free and heavily reinforced. The problem is more cosmetic, and annoying, than structural. I shall probably rip into it before going down the route you have...

    Bubbly defender rear door

Being a captive of the current situation, and busying myself on Defender jobs, I find that I am running out of things to do on it. Perhaps the one remaining task is to do something about its rear door. About 10 years ago I applied adhesive chevron markings to it and for the last few years have...

Windscreen and seal replacement, top bulkhead void.

Stumpy, That's a great help! Thank you. With your help I may now be able to have the second dry Defender in the Kingdom! I'm also looking forward to studying your rebuild account. I am a slightly older bloke trying to keep my Defender going with the help of my grand daughter. Once again, I am...

Windscreen and seal replacement, top bulkhead void.

Thanks for your message Lightning, I doubt that that the td5 is much different from my 200 Tdi except of course being newer and more desirable and I suspect yours is rust free! Perhaps the void is a product of my misunderstanding of component diagrams of the defender bulkhead which seems to be...
