    3.9i road speed transducer wiring

Hi all, I'm about to (finally) fit a road speed transducer to my 3.9i auto 90, not least because I've been having a lot of running problems recently and it's one more thing to rule out. I have the transducer (ex RRC apparently) and it has two cables from it. I know one (the yellow) is the...

    Starting and ignition woes

Well, today I finished the job off by replacing the plugs and HT leads, checking the timing, and I soldered and heat-shrunk the temporary joints on the amp to distributor cables, and took it for a run. What a difference! It runs *much* better, much more perky, more responsive, quicker, just...

    Starting and ignition woes

@v8250, I’m pretty sure it was the amp, I can’t confirm 100% but before I changed that I did a lot of wiggling of all the LT cables and nothing changed. Not conclusive of course, but that’s my gut feel.

    Starting and ignition woes

@Ratae yes it certainly does. Repeatedly, too. I need to change the leads and check the timing now, then have a run out to see how it's going. Before all this it was decidedly less than perky so I hope this will sort that out too.

Haha, I got the email with the preview of your reply which didn’t show the strike-through formatting, and was going to apologise for not having explained myself clearly - so it’s not just you!!

    Starting and ignition woes

It's time for an update, as I know you've all been sitting on the edge of your seats waiting :D Initially things were somewhat infuriating. If I left the car overnight, it would always start first time, but if I let it run for a minute or two then turned it off, it wouldn't restart. At all...

    Starting and ignition woes

@capo - it turns over fine (well, it did until the repeated attempts to start it started to flatten the battery!) but it just doesn't fire up. Or sometimes does! Waiting on the new bits turning up now before I have another crack at it.

Have also done those already! (There are two on mine, alongside each other, don’t know why). I know they’re the RPM signal to the ECU but is that a critical prerequisite for it to run?

    Starting and ignition woes

Well I've ordered the parts from Simon now, some of them are pre-terminated but I'll need to put new spades on the wires between the amp and the coil, so everything will be up to full spec - let's see what happens!

    Starting and ignition woes

Thanks @capo . On the previous page you posted a coil and a remote amp kit - as far as I can see the remote amp kit will give me the lead which connects the amp to the distributor (as well as a new amp)? For a few quid more they include the cable to the coil, so I think that has to be my next...

    Starting and ignition woes

Update time: today was the first time I had a chance to have another go at it. First things first. Bear in mind that I walked away last time because it wouldn't start.......so I put the key in, turned it, and it immediately fired into life. It hasn't been touched since it last would NOT...

    Starting and ignition woes

Yes I think that has to be it. It's certainly the next thing to target. New plugs and leads turned up today but they can wait until it's at least running again.

    Starting and ignition woes

Today conspired against me spending much time on this today but I finally managed to get outside at about 5pm. I did the following (which included restarting the car after each step): Started the car. Car started fine. Replaced the rotor arm with the red simonbbc one. Car started fine...

    3.9i timing marks

Thanks both. I wrote this before the other posts about the starting problems, my intention was to change the cap and arm and check the timing (as I've never done so, just thought it would be prudent to!). I'll do this once I get the damn thing running reliably again. I've done the white paint...

    Starting and ignition woes

Thanks @classic kev, that's useful info to know. I haven't had a chance to get back on it but the LT wiring is definitely where Im headed next.

    Starting and ignition woes

That's an interesting thought. The new one is a Simon one so I would have expected it to be a decent one. It's out in the shed at the moment but I'l check and report back!

    Starting and ignition woes

It's currently running back on the old arm. I don't know the history of that one, it's one which I just added to the "bits" box somewhere along the way. Possibly from my old RRC. Anyway, I think, without checking, that it's a riveted one. The simonbbc one I have is a red one, moulded and the...

    Starting and ignition woes

So tonight's update: This morning I tried to start it just in case it had a fit overnight, but still nothing. I didn't touch it beyond that, just turned it over then walked away. Waited until dark as per Col's suggestion above (plus I had a mountain of other things to do today anyway, plus I...

    Starting and ignition woes

Thanks @Ratae. Been out and checked that and it's ok. So that's one less thing to worry about (although a small part of me did think that if it was that it would be a quick win!). I'll have a go through all the low-tension wiring later today and report back. Thanks also Col, I'll bear that in...

    Starting and ignition woes

Thanks capo, this is really helpful! Yes, that's the distributor I have. Those symptoms you describe above with your 110 are very very similar to what I have. I'll have another good go through it, check the cables out, and maybe change the amp if necessary. (Incidentally, the OEM part number...
