    P38A Replacement alternator AMR2938

Hi Guys I need to replace my alternator which is an original Magneto Marelli. It's got a low output (not surprising being 24 years old) and I get a flat battery on regular occasions. The battery is also about 7 years old (non-brand name). I am aware of the battery drain issues, especially with...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

OK, I am not going to have a go at fixing it. As promised some pics. Strange clear gel between board and heatsink on rear.

    P38A GEMS idle problem

I will see what I can do to satisfy our curious minds. Not losing anything by it as its knackered.

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Agreed. She is purring like a cat again at idle. Are MAFs repairable? I was thinking of opening it to have a look, but I am guessing it is a fairly simple circuit between the connector and the wire. +5v reference and ground plus a return signal for the voltage to the ECU..?

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Yes internally the one I picked up (essentially for free) despite the blue dot has the same internals as the interim with the metal RFI shield on the board. Is it worth swapping out for this one? I know the one I have on the car at the moment has a blue dot too, not looked inside, but it does...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Yes I was getting excited too. I saw it there and could not remember what colour dot was good news. Its a blue. Not until I got home that my extra level of excitement dwindled........

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Hi All here is an update. I swapped the MAF for one from a scrap yard and its all back to normal. Starts instantly and idles around 700 pm, in fact, it has never idled so smoothly. Picked up loads of spares too from the old P38 that was being torn apart. TPS, IACV, all temp sensors, grabbed a...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Some readings after 5 mins of good idling: Coolant temp = 61C Intake temp 22C RPM = 625 TPS Volts = 0.65v Short term fuel trims bank 1 = 24.2 Short term fuel trims bank 2 = 24.2 MAF (CFM) ranges from 0.5 to 1.2 which seems amazingly low. If I unplug the MAF nothing happens at all now. Plug it...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Agreed on the GEMs by Poole, but it was recommended by a reputable source and is essentially the same engine management. Reading voltage with GEMS Lite not a DVM. Engine temp was measuring about 45-50 degrees at the time I last checked so warming up. Understand Nanocom Evo is new standard...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

I do not think its coil pack related, it was all ok until the MAF cable fell apart and I resoldered it. Checked TPS voltage, back to 0.65v before attempting to start. Looking at other reports and some Youtube vids it seems to not be unusual to see the TPS down below half a volt at closed...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Thanks. The 0.85v I quote comes from page 16 of the GEMS by Poole manual as supplied by Saint.V8. It also states lower values may result in poor idle characteristics. That is all I have to go on. I will double check the TPS voltage with the engine off again. I am not sure I have anything that...

    P38A GEMS idle problem

Hi Guys Bringing this thread back to life sadly as I have issues again. Sorry if it appears twice with slightly different wording, my session timed out and I needed to log in again (losing what I had written). Started with routine maintenance and cleaning in the engine bay. Basically the MAF...

    P38A P38 Sunroof Woes

Another quick update. Managed to find other sunroof motor related posts on here, found out how to re-engage motor by twisting back a quarter turn. All now ok. Not the smoothest at tilting (by manual or motor) but it all seems to work and did not seem to leak in the recent heavy rain. On to the...

    P38A P38 Sunroof Woes

Update time. The sheet of wood is now removed from the car's roof. I have a re-built sunroof made from some of my original parts, a RR Classic slide and tilt rail (they are the same) and a new used glass that is is really good condition (came with good seal). It operates really well manually...

    P38A P38 Sunroof Woes

All great points and I do keep up with maintenance on my cars knowing they are all way way way beyond the intended life of the manufacturer and other than the P38 which at present just needs a sunroof (or seal) the only car off the road has turned itself into a long term project due to a...

    P38A P38 Sunroof Woes

I think I have possibly found someone that has a good glass and frame. However, I must say that to refer the entire car as a bad design is not entirely fair.:( Thanks

    P38A P38 Sunroof Woes

Thanks for the tip. I wondered if a cassette would be a better option. The problem is all of the cassettes I can find on ebay at the moment are in really rough condition. Some show rust under the glass edge, so I fear I will be back to this same point in a year or so. Looks like the guy you...

    P38A P38 Sunroof Woes

Hi All Long time no posting...... Odd for a P38 owner. :-) My sunroof started to refuse to close and stayed up one side. I decided to remove the entire thing and work on it out of the car. I have ordered some new plastic guides for both sides as part of a repair kit but they have not arrived...

    Annoying squeaking while driving.

Just to let you all know the problem was fixed 4 years ago as pointed out. However, I do have another annoying fault as of today. I will post a new thread about that though and see if we can resurrect it in a few years time :-)
