P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

This is an early one from1996, so it makes sense to run direct from the alternator to the battery. I could not work out at all why they ran it down to the starter, then back up to the battery. Cheers

P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

Looking at the wires on it, the thin one is D+, which I guess is AKA the lamp wire. So I am not referring to that one. The main B+ then, which is actually a smaller gauge than the main battery cables. It's original, so I wonder why it's smaller..... Sounds like I need to get under there and...

P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

Wait, in terms of D+, you are not referring to the tiny thin brown wire running off of the alternator into the same part of the loom are you? There are 2 wires on mine. 1 x Thick red (slightly charred) but thinner (guess 30% of the diameter) than the main battery B+ cable; and 1 x thin brown wire.

P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

Thanks for your help so far. Appreciated. It may be D+ but if you look at the other diagram below it mentions B+. Both refer to connector Z106. I guess the smaller wire is between the starter solenoid and the alternator, but it's not clear, almost contradictory.

P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

There are 2 heavy gauge cables from the battery terminal. 1 to the fusebox, the other seems to go down to the starter/solenoid. The cable from the alternator is a smaller gauge and disappears into trunking towards the fusebox. I will grab a couple of metres of cable to replace that, should be...

P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

Thanks, but the problem is surely that means replacing the engine wiring loom as it is all 1 item.

P38A Alternator cable repair advice needed

Hi All GEMS 4.6 with original Magneti Marelli alternator but new rectifier/regulator. Been running fine for a very long time. My car conked out while driving but first threw a load of errors like it was a flat battery. It seems the main red B+ power cable on the alternator was slightly burnt...

    P38A PAG oil advice

The compressor is not new or reconditioned. It's just one taken off of a working car (not sure how long ago). I presume is drained as nothing leaks from the ports. I cannot see a drain plug like on some. The car has no refrigerant in it at all. Sounds like the best option is to divide an equal...

    P38A PAG oil advice

Thanks. I have had similar from AC re-charge places that just look blank. Rave says " Refill the compressor with the following amount of new refrigerant oil: V8 up to 99MY 100 cm 3" But how? just pour into the AC lines? Which one? Cheers

    P38A PAG oil advice

Hi I am just installing a good secondhand OEM Sanden AC compressor and I just wanted some advice, please. Do I need to put some PAG oil into it? Seems 180ml of Nippon Denso ND-oil 8 or PAG 46 is used in the pumps. I am guessing its not a good idea to run it without the oil in it...... I have...

P38A V8 GEMS fuel filter fitting

New filter installed. Original black I rings looked fine, I did not use the copper washers. A little smear of Hylomar blue on the threads of the fittings and all looks good. I will find out if it leaks when I reconnect the fuel rail and turn the key. Before that, I need to fit one rocker cover...

P38A V8 GEMS fuel filter fitting

I have ordered a new filter. When I fit it I am going to reuse the existing rubber O rings and not fit the 2 copper washers; that way I should be back to where I was but with a new filter.

P38A V8 GEMS fuel filter fitting

Hi All I decided to swap out my fuel filter while doing other work and the old one came off no problem. I noticed the fuel lines had a small black O ring on each side, again no problem I was just going to pop the lines into the filter and nip them up. The new filter came with 2 copper washers...

Cleaning rocker assembly and top of heads in situ?

Cheers I have already wiped over the rockers and looked a little closer at the dirt build-up. I do not think it is too bad, like you say wait until the major surgery comes. Here are some pics anyway. Does it look like the oil holes/ports are clear enough? BTW, this is the original engine with...

Cleaning rocker assembly and top of heads in situ?

Hi All I have a 96 P38 4.6 and am changing the valley and rocker gaskets as I have an oil weep that is making a bit of a mess in places and started to smoke a very little on the rear of one bank is it drips on the exhaust. While in there I have noticed that despite regular oil changes with name...

P38A Dash swapped out, wobbly seat and more

Sorry, should have included pics. but it would be of the knackered dash, no dash at all then new dash. Still may do that. I did manage to thoroughly clean under the bonnet as in under the air box, EAS box, fuse box etc..... Nice and shiny now I Will post some of the other repairs later.

P38A Dash swapped out, wobbly seat and more

Hi All Long time no posts. My 1996 436 HSE has had a knackered dash for a long time. Various issues are (ere) as follows: South African heat and the sun seemed to warp the pad in early life, particularly around-the-clock binnacle and the demist vents under the windscreen. The pad was damaged by...

    Ramp/Lift in the Wiltshire/Hampshire area

Hi thanks. I am starting to think the same for a majority of it. The main concern I have is giving a welder enough room to weld the front chassis rails with the subframe still in situ. I may be able to undo it and let it swing down (supporting the engine) and but then I think there is even less...

    Ramp/Lift in the Wiltshire/Hampshire area

Hi Guys I hope you are all well. I am looking to borrow or rent a ramp/lift in the Hampshire/Wiltshire area. Does anybody know of one I can borrow to pop a Jag on? I need to lower the front subframe on my XJ and get a little welding done on the chassis rails by the V mounts. I plan to do the...
