    90 Td5 re chassis - progress

Super will take a look, so far it’s not felt to difficult. I’m fortunate to have a mechanic friend so engine etc he’s going to help with. Then repairs to body etc...

    90 Td5 re chassis - progress

Good luck with the rebuild and keep me posted on progress!

    Stainless or zinc coated bolts?

But what’s the actual advantage of the SS bolts? As I said above, they are technically worse in both strength and galvanic potential, cost more all for the fact that I’m hopeful more than 20years time when another chassis is need that they are “a bit” easier to remove? There doesn’t seem to be a...

    90 Td5 re chassis - progress

So my understanding is that marslands use the pressed C sections from the old Land Rover factory, but are at 2mm and Richards use cut and welded 2.5mm, overall I think the are comparable, but at 2.5mm its 25% more material, so galvanising aside... should last 25% longer! and as my mechanic...

    Stainless or zinc coated bolts?

On the inode scale it appears that SS is a good 0.2 difference which is pretty much 20% more reactive and is higher up so will react with the ally, and eat it faster... where the zinc is lower so the ally will eat the zinc first in a sacrificial manor till it hits the steel below...

    Stainless or zinc coated bolts?

So fundamentally... no benefit other than removing them at a later date, or actually if weaker and more prone to reaction and eating the expensive aluminium parts, it actually worse, please let me know if I have understood this correctly.. With fingers crossed, as a nut and bolt rebuild should...

    Stainless or zinc coated bolts?

So, this is the big thing I see lots of people offering SS, but from my understanding this is a worse combination on the anodic scale and will eat the alloy... technically I believe that the ally would eat the zinc first... so just trying to understand why SS is better and as they are way more...

    90 Td5 re chassis - progress

It’s a shame as some of the main rails are actually quiet good... then there’s bit that aren’t

    90 Td5 re chassis - progress

The bulk head is actually very good... it was one of the reasons I bought this one, I knew the chassis was shot. A little corrosion behind the door seals, but think this can be managed and either treated or cut out, but other than that bh is surprisingly good. Other than that pretty good...

    90 Td5 re chassis - progress

Just 1 week into the strip down (managing to get a few hours each day) and it’s going... ok! Body off, engine and trans out... bulkhead next... I want to do a full thread on the rebuild eventually. Few pics attached.

To re chassis or not... this is the question?

Hi all, so needing to buy a chassis in the coming days, but came across this one on Bearmach - anyone got experience of them? https://bearmach.com/full-galvanised-xd-heavy-duty-chassis-suitable-for-defender-90-td5-vehicles-kvd100330hd

Super thanks guys very helpful. On the marsland are all the rails the same across the 90 chassis? and you are saying Richards is a little more substantial in general?

Thanks for the encouragement! I was going to start a thread in the rebuild as a step by step. I just need to chose a chassis!!!

To re chassis or not... this is the question?

Thanks for the advice, with the Richards construction, in terms of “heavier” do you mean thicker steel? Just wondering if this may last a longer?

To re chassis or not... this is the question?

Great thanks, by the c channel you mean in the chassis rails in 2 pieces then welded together... Does the marsland justify the extra in price? what would be the advantage and disadvantages of each?
