Hi the vibtation could be a number of things, but the occasional jump im afraid does sound like ird is failing, my advice would be to change the bearings now before it costs you an arm and a leg to repair regards

Hi if it is just bearings worn (normally centre bearing, crownwheel bottom) you will just get a wine and maybe a little clonk on full lock in reverse, on a really shattered ird you will feel the car jump and lock then suddenly free itself not a nice feeling, the quicker you get the ird sorted...

is the timing anything to do with ird's? funny man

it is easy mate go to a scrap yard get a piston out of any 1.8 rover k series, i did have some lying around but think i have lost them i did one last week after i did a head gasket and forgot to take the timing tool out which smashed the piston, it only took me about 4 hours to finish.

Hi yes its very easy to fit a piston with the engine still in i have done many, Take the sump off remove oil rail and away you are 2 bolts push it out, new piston in, very simple with the head off
