I checked the heater plugs timing in the morning and they gave 5 seconds so that makes me think the temperature sensor is working ok. Off to get the pump belt checked then!

Yep new big tyres on the back and tyre pressures need to be spot on as well. Bell engineering told me the VCU should only ever be warm? Bell engineering by the way are a good bunch, really recomend them as when the VCU they sent me was post damaged they fixed it really quick and sent it back on...

It was all ok, my mate helped me change the IRD, it was a bugger of a job to be honest, not for an amateur like me! (Mates a car wrestler) New VCU is a good amateur job but the IRD is bloody hard!!!!! I now have a running Hippo!!!!!!! :)

Ah, that confirms what I need to know thanks! I was worried a bearing had been missed which would have been bad.... :eek:

So is there a bearing on the end of the shaft or just the oil seal? I wanted to make sure before fitting it. :)

I just got a recon IRD today and noticed if I grab the input/drive shaft I can wobble it about a bit. I presume there is no bearing at the start of the shaft but just an oil seal? Is that right??

Update: Drained IRD box oil and could see it was silver as it drained, loads of fine swarf on the drain plug magnet also, this I hope is 99% confirmation of the IRD being stuffed? I will be taking it out next weekend and then I will have a peek inside! Took off the VCU/prop and have a...

I looked at doing it but after the cost of a rebuild kit it dosen't seem worth it...

Well I finally did it, I bought a Freelander to keep my olde Defender company! Trouble is I bought one that goes clunk clunk clunk! I only paid £400 for it (98 XEDi) with six months tax and half a tank of the expensive stuff and three brand new tyres so I can spend out a bit on it, just a bit...

I had a handbrake do this on mine, if one of the return springs of the drum shoes breaks it locks on the handbrake, drop the rear prop and you can drive it front wheel drive if so, got me home anyway!

Always the way isin't it! I tried using a wedge chisel to prise the arm off but when the steering box oil seal started weeping I stopped...:eek: Seems dry now thankfully!! So I tried using a sharp punch to dislodge the bearing from above without luck. Even if I got this arm off I don't know how...
