The spring goes from the backplate onto the stud on the shoe which keeps it tight onto the cam adjuster,

This is on eBay, I live 20 mile away from S&A and picked mine up, but you need GL4 not GL5 as that can be bad for the phosphor bronze bits in gearbox as you say

Welcome to Landyzone, I can’t recall but there will be some threads sticking out of the tubes if you clean them up you will see which is the LH tread as it does look odd
It probably doesn’t matter which end has what as as when you turn the the tube doing tracking one way makes it longer other...
They certainly test your patience but keep hanging in and you’ll get there.
