Sound advice. Already done, thank you.

    Steering gets stiff when warm

Recent trip of over 1000 miles to Scotland & back. Steering now fine. Seems to suggest that the steering fluid goes off with time and not just with use.

    Sealing below windscreen

My year 2000 Defender 110 is leaking on both sides now. Nothing unusual, I'm sure, but I would like to slow it down a bit. Is it possible to replace the foam strip below the windscreen panel without taking the roof off?

    Comma coolant

I recently checked the Comma site. Red G30 recommended for Y2K TD5 defender. I think it's OAT. I'm tempted to stick with Land Rover green antifreeze. Older classic vehicles not individually listed but blue Coldmaster seems to be the thing to use for anything that would have used Bluecol /...

Koni adjustable shocks - What adjustment?

I have just bought some Heavy track shocks for a Defender. Couldn't find any satisfying answer to setting them up, so I contacted Koni. I got a pretty hopeless answer by 'phone but the following very helpful reply to my email: The raid shocks in this case are already a little firmer than the...

    Shock absorber measurement

Considering a new set of Koni Heavy track Raid shocks for my 3.5 ton rated TD5 defender X reg. This permanently runs heavily laden. I see two options available for the rear, 0 - 40mm and 40 - 60mm. Is this measurement of lift above standard? It's ex military with dual coil springs on the rear...

Reusing brake fluid used for bleeding brakes?

I had to take a car back to bare metal years ago. Emptied a can of brake fluid (that I had used the previous year for topping up) onto the bonnet. Hardly touched it and the paint was only cellulose - but about 20 years old. Complete waste of time... Spent a fortune on Nitromors.

Reusing brake fluid used for bleeding brakes?

Plenty of us have. When we buy a second hand car. I had a nearly lethal experience many rears as a result. I bought a classic car that had been standing on grass for a few years. Welded up the underside, freed up the seized bits and took it for a spin and all was well. Some weeks later I...

    Has anyone used...

I just bought one for £130 for a Volvo V50. It looked very good for the money. Sadly, when the turbo was removed the garage snapped 3 of the bolts trying to get it apart and it would have cost a fortune in engineering to fix this. I gave in and fitted a new turbo. Fortunately I checked with...

    Steering gets stiff when warm

Update on this. I pumped out as much fluid as I could from the reservoir and replaced with new. Bled some out from the rack. To recap, the vehicle is 18 years old but fewer than 25000 miles. Old fluid was pretty dark. Steering seems better now. Ok on a journey of about 200 miles in each...

    Lock trouble

I seem to have dodged a bullet. By holding the inner handle out slightly and flicking the locking button up and down I managed to get it to unlock. Everything back to normal after that so I don't know what caused it. I will leave the door card off until I find the cause.

    Lock trouble

Handles were replaced as well as locks. Inside lock button will pull up but doesn't unlock. Door release pulls out but doesn't do anything. I think one of the clips has pinged off and a rod fallen out inside the door. Considering undoing the hinges but there is a flange on the striker that I...

    Lock trouble

I recently changed all the locks on my year 2000 TD5 Defender. All well for a few days but now the passenger door is locked and cannot be unlocked from outside or inside. What's my best option for getting it open?

    Leather repairing scuffs

Google Woolies Trim. They do some decent renovation kits. A top tip for leather seats is to use Hydrophane oil to restore flexibility and strength to dried out leather. An old car I bought soaked up so much that I was convinced it was going through into the stuffing, but I tried using it on...

Defender 90 low emission zone defiance

There seems some sense in making an allowance for higher emissions for a vehicle that carries more passengers, but the above examples of vehicles with 2 seats being exempt suggests we are trying to apply common sense to something pretty arbitrary. Pot luck how the vehicles were originally...

Defender 90 low emission zone defiance

This is broadly the case, but there are exceptions. Anyone in London wanting a Defender van should use the on line LEZ checker on ex utility company or ex military vehicles. There is no hard and fast rule, but it seems that if they were registered as an Estate you are good to go. I have...

Best rust proofing company near Oxford

I had someone in Radnage recommended by Dingocroft. Can't immediately find the details but a call to them should pay off. I'm still hoping to find the time to get mine done.

    Dual charging circuit

As JulianF says, but if it has a smart charger for the auxiliary battery then the disconnected positive lead won't have any volts on it because the system knows the battery is absent. If you are installing a split charge system you may want to consider a VSR (voltage sensitive relay).

Gas welding goggles for glasses wearer

Update - I just got some 50mm diameter lenses on Fleabay that fit gas welding goggles such as BOC Bocal. The description was Double Convex Dia 50mm Focal Length 1000mm Optical Lens Fitted in place of the clear glass in front of the filters. Not quite as much magnification as I would have...
