    Advice needed for long journey!

Give it a check over before the off. If it's leaking sort the leak. I often do more than 400 miles in a day and I've always got there. Main things I've had to tinker with have been electrical and once a stuck open throttle... If you need much more than £100 you need to sort your engine out! I...

1st a bang, then a puff of smoke.... loss of power and now wont start.

What sort of knocking - see if you can locate where it's coming from and if it gets worse under load / as you rev it. Getting a modern mechanic to tune a carb and set timing is an art in itself...better of to learn how to play with them yourself. If its running rich check to ensure that the...

    Zenith carb replacement

Watch out there are copies of Webers around too which I've heard are also crap. If you buy a second hand 34ICH or DMTL make sure its got the right jets in for a Land Rover as they have been fitted to a lot of different engines and may be jetted for a much smaller or larger or revvyer engine.

    Dom's 88" rechassis

The RoverDrive one is a bit close to the 4th gear position for comfort...so I bent the stick a bit! If I had the time and tooling I'd quite like to make a dash/column mounted lever as even with the longer stick its a bit out of a reach and a bit intimate if there's a middle seat passenger!

    My new insurance £72????

Performance direct seem to like motors with modifications and extras. I had a moderately modified Mazda MX-6 with business miles with them and the quote was cheaper with the mods and business than without! If you call Flux they will probably drop their price - just don't try to bull****...

    Dom's 88" rechassis

Yes, it's a Roverdrive. The lever is a little longer, which is a good thing as it gets quite a lot of use and is fairly easy to reach. On the roverdrive you can use the OD in any gear and on the hills round here it's good to have a split between 2nd and 3rd and 4th... Hoping to get a few...

Got a bit more done: Front prop on Radiator in Roll bar bolted up and sealed to floor Windscreen back on - new windscreen wiper blade came with broken clips! ordered a pair of straight ones from Rimmers Wings on and mudgards fitted (that took some doing and bodging) 1/2 front floor and...

    Rocker clatter

your valve or rocker shaft springs might be a bit weak

    Rocker clatter

The round bit is the follower - that is the bit that can get grooves worn in it causing erratic rocker/valve clatter. The brass thing is the tappet and they can jam in the guide (the bit at the top). As I said earlier though don't be scared to take the rocker cover off - it might squirt a bit...

    Rocker clatter

Blackburn - I think you misunderstand my post. Rockers are not tappets . Tappets are the things between the followers and the push rods and they cannot be got at without removing the head. "adjusting the tappets" is a misleading phrase.

    Axle Straps

They're meant to only touch when your shock absorbers are running out of travel. I got a Rocky Mountain springs and shocks kits and they seem pretty adamant that they should be fitted!

    Manifold

The manifold comes off easily. I'd remove the carb first and try and split the exhaust and inlet manifolds whilst its on the car as you can get a decent swing on it. I'd try drilling the studs out and helicoilng it - that's what I've done and they seem to have taken well. I wasn't sure if the...

    Zenith carb replacement

The weber 34ich is not that bad. They lose you a little power but save a useful amount of fuel, fit relatively easily and are pretty reliable. DMTL32/34 for a 90 is better than a 34ICH but then you need to find manifolds for a 90 too and do some faffing to make the exhaust fit to the manifold...

    Rocker clatter

It may feel like that but is possibly not that bad. It could be a sticking valve or the rocker shaft might be loose. You may have a sticky tappet or a worn cam follower. The cam followers are simply discs that roll over the cam and push the tappet up and down you can end up with a groove worn...

    Weber 32/34 DMTL

here you go see attachment - worth buying the book. There's plenty of stuff online about DMTL's just search weber DMTL. It's worth taking a picture of the missing bit....well the place where this missing bit is missing from!

    Straight 6 rebuild

Looking lovely. I worry about my bonnet sometimes. It's maybe worth stripping down and checking the release mechanism. It might not be engaging properly due to paint, dry grease or being set too low. It really does look well.

    Air filter and heavy breathing

Take some decent pictures with a camera in macro mode so we can have a look. Depends how bad the lip/scratches are. A good modern composite gasket can mend a lot of problems. A new set of valves and seals shouldn't cost much. Or you may be able to grind the ones already on there if they're...

    Weber 32/34 DMTL

There's no pictures. Fast Road Cars are a good place to get parts. An overhaul and good clean is always worthwhile. These are good carbs that work well on a landy when set up right. The picture is not attached but I'm guessing it might be where one of the overrun/idle solenoids go. You...
