So much better! Performance has gotten better since too - don't think the actuator linkage had moved in quite a while so the VNT ring had seized a bit - put another 300 miles through it this week which has freed it off, cruising happily at 75mph now, even had a brief stint at 85mph!! Getting...

    Diagnose my Freelander?

I need a proper garage with a heater! Bloody Arctic out there today - fiddly little 10millies and connectors with numb fingers wasn't easy  But, I have a working turbo again!

Freelander 1 Boost solenoid / VNT linkage

Checked as far as I can see - 1 to actuator is good but old, will be replacing. Next one goes to the vac chamber via a little inline filter at the back of the engine bay, filter looked clean - the remaining pipe I could follow very far before losing it - but thats marked "ATM" (atmosphere?) and...

Bingo. New solenoid. Can now see the actuator/VNT linkage moving slowly when giving the engine a bit of throttle - not by much, but maybe 10mm of travel, slowly. Not sure how much travel I'm supposed to be seeing, or how quickly its supposed to move, but at least it's enough to show the VNT ring...

Freelander 1 Boost solenoid / VNT linkage

So I think Ive fixed the lack of power / poor MPG issues Ive noticed on my TD4, by swapping out the boost solenoid, cutting some fresh ends on any perished vac pipes, and cleaned up the contacts on on the MAP sensor plug. A quick test drive and the car definitely seems to have a lot more low to...

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Thanks @Madmustang - will have the doorcard off at the weekend if I get time after doing the boost solenoid :) Think that's exactly what it is to be honest - degraded contacts. Wiper speeds I and II will work fine after a little wiggle, they come on and stay on, as does wash/wipe. Intermittent...

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Yep! New ones are on the rear now, the fronts are barely worn. Will be keeping an eye on my pressures as part of weekly maintenance. Found a couple of new niggles too! A very quite wirring sound is just audible when driving, coming from NSF wheel I think, gets a little louder on left hand...

    Diagnose my Freelander?

It's definitely on the to-do list, I'll probably look at buying a second hand item and a refurb kit, and swap it out in the near future. Tyre pressures were all over the place when I checked this evening, fonts were ok but one of the rears was at 20psi and the other at 28. That wont have been...

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Well Im pleased to report back that the VCU seems to be in "ok" conditon. Doing the one wheel up test, I can lean on the tyre with both hands and turn it slowly without force - the wheel slowly but smoothly rotates. Putting a wheelbrace on one nut gives the same result, and the more force I...

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Nope - barely been under the bonnet actually, only bought the car on Sunday and its pitch black by the time I get home from work. Saturday will be the first opportunity I get to have a proper look over.

    Diagnose my Freelander?

2002 TD4 2.0, symptoms are exactly as per another thread on here actually (no power at 70mph, speed drops off on an incline) where the turbo solenoid had failed, so ordered a new one to swap out when it arrives.

Roger that. Will swap them over tonight.

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Quickly checked the tyres on my lunch break. All 4 are the same sizes, front 2 are brand new, rear are nearly new - the radial difference must be 1.5mm max Id say. Will check pressures when I'm home, and jack up a rear wheel.

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Unavoidable at the mo - I'll need to do the 15mile drive home from work just to jack and test! :/ "Hello, RAC?..."

Uh-oh!! I might have bought a lemon then o_O Will jack up and report back...

    Passenger Door not unlocking

Yep new tyres according to paperwork received, will give them a check / check pressures too. As per above thread will also do the one wheel test too just to tick off the VCU.

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Thank you - I'll get right onto checking that out. I did report a tight binding feeling on full lock (but not under general cornering), and was told "that's normal, that's the VCU engaging rearwheel drive" - I'll do a torque test anyway as you described :)

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Stupid question time; but if its seized up, what are the implications? I assume that would mean its running in 4WD constantly and therefore using more fuel?

    Diagnose my Freelander?

Hi, thanks for replying. Re the one wheel test: I think I understand how to test (jack one wheel up, apply force to turn slowly) and that if its seized I won't be able to turn it at all - or alternatively if it spins freely then Im in 2WD only... correct?
