    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Yep, the rain and wind both turned up as soon as I'd got the first coat of paint on  The tank has come out pretty well. I plugged up all the orifices with old towelling and other bits of fabric and it seems to have withstood the punishment. I didn't cover the bit where the connectors for...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Another month of fiddly little jobs goes by and although progress is slow it's going roughly in the right direction. The A-frame ball joint looked alright until I took the boot off and discovered that it was rusted to buggery. Luckily I had a new one in my small collection of bits that I...

    My Defender 90 200tdi rebuild

Looking good. I'm about to spray all the underbody bits and am also at the waiting for parts stage, but you've stolen a leap on me by having a bulkhead that's not riddled with holes, let alone painted. Good luck with getting the rolling chassis together.

    Hub bearing oil seal depth

Thanks. It's all fitted now so time will tell if it's right or not!

    Hub bearing oil seal depth

I'm just refitting a new inner hub oil seal and even though it's at the required 4mm depth the lip protrudes slightly beyond the top of the hub whereas the old seal has a shorter lip. Is this correct? It's an OEM part FTC4785 (the same code is on the old seal) going into a K-reg Defender 90 rear...

    My Defender 90 200tdi rebuild

Looking good. I think we're at roughly the same point in our rebuilds so it's interesting to compare notes. I've just started the 'painting bits' stage in the hope of having a rolling chassis in the next couple of months. Might be a bit optimistic but we'll see!

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

A very long overdue update on progress, delayed because of the distinct lack of it. My blind optimism that Christmas and New Year would be full of days spend happily bolting together bits of Land Rover turned into one fortnight-long game of being nice to the in-laws who never leave. Anyway, I've...

    Greasy drum

Thanks. I'll get a new stub axle and seal ordered. Just need to work out whether I need FRC3132 or FRC8540. Any thoughts on which I'd need for a K-reg 90 with no trace of a code to be found on the axle?

    Greasy drum

I'm getting the rear axle ready for painting and after a whole evening spent getting the seized brake drums off I've discovered one of them was full of grease. I stripped down the hub expecting to find a shredded oil seal but there's nothing obvious. The only thing that was damaged was the...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Tell me about it. I spent the best part of an evening drilling out the bolts holding the spring seats onto the axle after the heads sheared off. Why Land Rover had to use captive welded nuts is anyone's guess. And in other news... ...it's here! Oooooh, shiny.

    Buzzweld Galv In One

Just got a reply from Buzzweld. GIO can be applied to a T-washed chassis as 'best practice'. We'll see how it goes!

    Buzzweld Galv In One

Thanks. Food for thought. I haven't found anyone who's used Galv In One yet!

    Buzzweld Galv In One

Has anyone had experience of Buzzweld's Galv in One chassis paint? I've bought some to paint my soon to arrive galvanised chassis but I'm having a few misgivings about it. According to Buzzweld you just scotchbrite and degrease the newly galved chassis and spray it on. But everyone I've...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

I've been wondering about the legalities of the whole chassis number thing. Can I stamp it onto the new chassis? Would someone buy a second hand chassis with the number ground off or does that just look dodgy?

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Yes, made a bit more progress this weekend. The front axle's off... My hi-lift gets a bit of use for the first time in years And after fighting with the bolts holding the shock mounts and a-frame for a while, the rear axle was ready to come out. One magically floating chassis ready for a...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

A couple more evenings in and things are coming along. A few more turns of the screw and the engine comes out. And I've realised that the broken drive belt was down the the alternator being seized solid. I remember seeing some smoke from under the bonnet when I started it up briefly to move...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

The TD5 bulkhead has been sold. For my next trick I will attempt to buy a galvanised one for not too much more. Nothing's leaping out at me from eBay. Has anyone had dealings with this lot? https://www.lr-refurb.co.uk/bulkheads or these http://www.classicbulkheads.com

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Just a quick update. Jobs achieved on Sunday: Roll chassis outside, turn it around (tricky without a steering wheel), sweep up big pile of rust, dirt and discarded gloves. The rolling chassis in the cold light of day. Somehow it actually looked worse when it was inside. After wrestling with...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Blimey, I've never done anything inspirational before. If it helps encourage anyone else along the way then all the better. Believe me, if I can do it anyone can!
