Series 3 SWB Nut and Bolt rebuild

You're really steaming ahead there. Puts my progress to shame!

    Glow Plug Nuts

Yes, I've had the same problem with the flexi hoses. You wonder how much it would cost them just to include the nuts! I'll get measuring. Thanks both.

    Glow Plug Nuts

I've just replaced a couple of glow plugs on my 200Tdi as the threaded end sheared off when I attempted to undo the nuts. For some inexplicable reason Beru can't see their way to including the tiny nut that clamps the ring connector to the glow plug and as the originals are seized onto the old...

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Christmas is coming, we still haven't moved house (bloody solicitors) and now my Irish in-laws are stranded here following the latest lockdown. In more positive news, I got a full day in on the Landy. The drop-arm ball joint was seized solid and took quite a bit of extracting even with the...

    Grubby Gearbox

That's so clean it almost seems a shame to use it! I'll give mine a good scrub at the very least, but I'm not sure it's going to end up looking like that.

    Grubby Gearbox

That's helpful, thanks. I think you might be right about the UJs. A lot of it does look like grease rather than oil and it's only on the one side of the box. I'll give it a good wash and see if it returns.

    Grubby Gearbox

I've just started looking at getting the gearbox ready for fitting to the new chassis and to say it needs a good clean is a bit of an understatement! But why is it so badly covered in oil/grease? Anywhere I should be looking to track down the source? It's an LT77.

New Chassis at last for Leaky the Landy - rebuild fred

Can't beat a brand new chassis. So shiny it's almost a shame to put T-wash on it. It's going to be a bit tight doing a rebuild in there, but if you can keep it tidy you might just manage it!

Thanks. I'll give it a go

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

Thanks. How best to remove them? Is it a question of knocking a big screwdriver through and levering them out?

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

That's probably a sensible thing to do given the state of the water pump. What do you seal the new plugs in with?

    1993 Defender 90 Rebuild

A month passes, and the gearbox still isn't back in place, but I haven't been completely idle. The engine tidying has taken a bit longer than expected, mainly due to everything being seized (thankfully not internally!) First stuck thing to remove, the viscous fan. I had to detach the fan blades...

    What are these bits for?

Of course! It's been so long since I took the exhaust off I'd forgotten how it attached. Thanks for clearing that up. I vaguely remember some enthusiasm for those magnetic "fuel savers" when I first got a car back in the late 90s, but can I assume that the fraudsters have made their millions...

    What are these bits for?

Nope, it's the original engine, and it's too flimsy for an engine mount. I wondered if the fuel pipe gizmo was one of those old wives tales about magnets and fuel efficiency.

    What are these bits for?

Just out of shot in picture 2. It's a Defender 200Tdi, not a Discovery.

    What are these bits for?

I've been tidying up my 200Tdi as part of a rebuild and I was wondering about a few things. I've labelled the photos with the bits I'm talking about. 1. Someone had used RTV to plug these small holes that look like the end of bolts coming through from inside the block (before they were pulled...

    Defenders Ridiculous Overspeed Warning Tone

Sounds like you might have the warning light cluster that was part of the ill-fated (and ridiculously named) Land Rover Llama project. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Land_Rover_Llama_dash_warning_lights.png

    Timing Belt and Seals

I did get it the pulley off in the end, but it wasn't pretty. Rust had formed a lip which the pulley couldn't get past, and despite using a soft faced mallet the repeated battering eventually damaged the pulley edges. It needed replacing anyway, but not quite as desperately as it does now! I...

    Timing Belt and Seals

I'm about to replace the timing belt in my 200Tdi. Should I replace the camshaft oil seal, crankshaft oil seal and the one in the timing cover while I'm at it? There's no obvious oil leakage from them, except maybe a small amount around the crankshaft seal. The engine has only done around...
