Thx Marjon - although as a 60-something retired bloke driving a Defender, boy racer could not be further from the truth! Logic of the waste gate makes perfect sense though….more homework for this week.

Thanks Marjon. Whistle dies down over 2 or 3 seconds on each gear change - and I don't hear it when the engine is under load, only on the over-run.

Update on my post from Friday. Blipping the loud pedal at rest does not induce the whistle, there are no sign of splits in hoses and the manifold studs all seem fine...no signs of soot or hot gas escape anywhere that I can see. The air filter box does not quite seat properly along it's front...

Hello all - MOT was due last week and as I am currently unable to work on the Landy myself, had it serviced (and top end of injector loom replaced) at the same time. It failed the MOT on brakes so had a new servo fitted. Drove it today and there is an audible transient whistle on the over-run...

Thanks both - and interesting that it's an MOT fail and yet one of the articles in the Spring LRO International magazine included EGR removal as one of steps to restoring TD5 performance! Guess I'll leave it as is....it's not like there's a shortage of other jobs to be getting on with.

Has anyone tried the ALLI Sport kit for late TD5's (ie where you do not need to remove the pipework all the way back at the exhaust manifold but blank it off at the heat exchanger connection)? My luck is such that I'll break one or both of the studs on the manifold so am reluctant to use one of...

In response to Knappster's post...here are a few pics...taken after the Landy's 16th birthday treat (...a wash!). Have also been busy fitting multiple layers of security so good on that front I think.

Is the diesel filter in the drivers side rear wheel arch showing signs of a leak? Had the same problem with my TD5 - the leaking filter was drawing air into the fuel lines. Have done a few local trips since the filter was replaced with no repeat of the issue.
