Thanks tottot, yes, old pump was working, no loose impellor. Changed it anyway. New one pumps water round fine. Or seems to, I question everything I have done on this.

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Thanks D1, but I checked that pipe (ejector assembly I think its called), and it's clean and clear. It blows through easily too. But, as it was a possible suspect I replaced it with a new one. And checked the new one before fitting. Also triple checked the 3 spigots (expansion tank inlet, stat...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

I have pressurised the entire system a few times (15-20 psi) when checking that all is secure. Longest time i left it pressured was about 2 hours. Any probs would/should have shown then. Pressure cap seems to release at about 20psi, although it should be around 15psi. I never let it get to 100...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

This morning i removed air filter, glow plug wiring, went for a drive, got it nice and hot. Removed glow plugs, disconnected cut off solenoid. Compression test on all cylinders. cyl 1 435 psi (406 a few weeks ago) cyl 2 424 psi (391) cyl 3 420 psi (413) cyl 4 431 psi (413) all pretty good, no...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Today I :- 1. Isolated heater matrix (15mm copper pipe) - bled etc. No change. 2. Fitted clear (ish) pipe to bleed ejector thingy (y pipe assy to expansion tank from stat and rad) - obective to see if air sneaking back from expansion tank - couldn't conclusively see anything. 3. But as it's...

Hoses have been looked at and look fine, inside and out...but they are about the only things that I've not changed! (And matrix)

I've had it 8 years, its never been overheated in that time. But cracked or damaged liner is starting to look like all thats left!

    300 tdi overheating...help!

type 1 Bleeding - by filling to rad bleed screw overflows. Fit screw. Then continue filling until stat house bleed screw overflows. Run for a while allowing coolant to flow, as observed through expansion tank. Usually squeeze bottom rad hose a bit to help expell air to exp tank. type 2 bleed -...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Update! Last weekend I was ill, so nothing happened! Well, bought new head, gaskets, bolts etc. This weekend I fitted the shiny new head. After fitting, bled the system, taking as much care as possible. Pressure tested for leaks - all fine. Took for run, exactly the same, overheats. Stat housing...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Not hot, as far as i remember (that was a month or more ago!), but I did run the engine for 10 mins while it was pressurised, expecting a rise/drop.... no change at all. Trying to find a dimensional drawing of the head or gasket so I can get a test plate made up to pressure test myself. If...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

The head has been tested, and is apparently ok. Got it back today. But I do still think the head is the problem, seems unlikely to be anything else. Will rebuild when new head gasket arrives...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Thanks I've both tested that original gauge is correct, and that sender is correct, both in landy and totally separate - water boiling in pan etc at various temps. Also fitted new gauge (ebay) and sender with totally new wiring (new feed/earth etc). Everything I try shows that reported temp is...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

True. But... raised temp increases water temp/creates steam, which increases pressure in cooling system. My system never seems to pressurise. I can take cap off even when temp just below red after 5 mile drive with just a little bit of pressure let out. (I have pressurised system to check cap...

Will try matrix bypass when head back on, although cant see how matrix can introduce air to system. also hope to get gas leak detector fluid to see if the extra gas is inlet (air) or exhaust (burnt fuel)

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Have flushed matrix (once during chassis rebuild last year), and early on in fault finding (flushed everywhere with hose, backwards and forwards)

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Yep, early on (4). That was before I realised that the problem seemed to be airlocks caused by extra air/gas. Bleed system, run for 5 miles, stat housing has filled with gas/air, no chance of stat opening. Havent checked that again (run with no stat) recently, to see what happens. May try when i...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

I tend to either follow the workshop manual (fill thru expansion tank etc) or fill thru rad and stat bungs. During this ongoing problem I've probably tried every refill variation there is out there. Including pipe burping! At a guess I've probably done it 20 plus times in the last 2 -3 months -...
