1987 Defender 90 for sale. Galvanised! SOLD

Due to circumstances beyond my control I'm having to sell my landy, but I'm not sure what its worth... **** SOLD **** 1987 300TDI, 7 seat. Main good points Last year I completely stripped and rebuilt it from the floor up. Main objective was to make it as good as I could underneath, while...

    Alternator connections

Physically, the wiring runs under the Thermostat housing, along the block under the glowplugs etc, then into cabin via a big multiway connector. On mine the wires into/outof this connector had a tendency to break. From memory its an 8 way connector, only 3 wires on mine actually still go through...

I would just like to say

I've got a dimmable wireless LED bulb, I can switch it on from anywhere in the world (or down at Tesco's). At 100% its bright enough for everyday use, or I can set it at 1% which seems about a candles worth!

    Defender Wing Panel Repair

I did get some stuff for sort of "soldering" ally when I was changing my chassis. Bloody expensive stuff, but I managed to attach a bit of ally angle to a bit of plate as practice. Just needed care and a blowlamp. I think that would be more reliable than rivets.

    Replacement TD5 galvanised chassis

When I was looking at replacing my Chassis (def 90) the various places I looked at were charging anywhere from £3k to 10k depending on what you needed to be done. Ended up doing it myself (needed bulkhead at the same time) plus fixed loads of other stuff that I found on my journey. So, I guess...

    What's that chuffing noise

My bet would be manifold gasket. HG would probably leak to cooling first. You could try feeling for gas blowing around CYl 4, if there is space to see!

    Bulkhead swap 300TDi Defender

I did mine outside on a driveway. You will find other stuff that needs doing, that will hugely increase the cost if a garage does it for you. Removed and installed by just me, using care and an engine hoist. Yes, it will take a lot of time, depending on what other problems you find.....

    Jumping Glow Plugs?

My 300 has always had a separate glowplug heater switch, not done with relays. (probably a previous owner fitted it). I very rarely use it to start, even in the depths of winter (ok, in the south of UK)

    Missing belt? 300tdi

My 300tdi doesnt have a Glowplug relay either. Just a push switch (possibly off a series), and I very rarely needed to use it.

Where Does The Battery Negative Cable on a Defender Hi 300tdi Attach Beneath The Vehicle ?

The main feed to the starter is the POS cable. Fits on with a 13mm (?) nut

    getting wiring to fusebox

Possibly you can remove the passenger grab handle (3 screws?), then down door pillar (behind L shaped plate with 2 screws?) to footwell and across behind carpet/mats whatever?

    300 tdi overheating...help!

My problem is not so much getting another engine as due to personal reasons I have nowhere to do the job and need the cash!

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Mine is certainly not the Thermostat. I've tested all three, and they open correctly at the right temperature. Anyway, its academic now, as I have to sell the landy. Block was skimmed and inspected by an engineering company, but the problem still persists. (everything to do with the cooling...

Front grill and light surround replacement advice

I use valetting gel on mine (87, 90), very quick and dead cheap way of getting back to black. You could also use black boot polish, even cheaper! Tcut on side/indicator lenses good for a quick shine. (Take off, give a wash inside and out, tcut outside)

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Thanks. Yes, both gauge and sender checked for accuracy, off vehicle, and on vehicle (to confirm loom and any earths). As exhaust gas is present in coolant, and head has been tested, cylinders compression tested, I am happy that the block is cracked. Probably very fine crack well down in the...

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Got myself some block test fluid, put it in a wine fermenter bubbler, warmed up engine, fitted bubbler to exp tank. Yes, slow release of gas, fluid slowly changed colour (20 mins) red to yellow.. So some exhaust gas in cooling system. Got to be cracked block. Will look for another engine.

    300 tdi overheating...help!

Brief update. Went to steam show monday, made myself a real pain with every 300tdi owner. 15 odd people (read that either way!) Got a couple of new variation on bleeding (jack up front as much as possible, and bleed from empty with engine running) which I might try. Consensus was that I seem to...
