Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

Thanks all. I’ll finish cleaning up the rockers and put back on. Then take another look / listen to see if I can hear the cam issue. I did try a bit of pipe to listen before and could only really narrow it down to the valve/piston area. But my ears are shot so far from reliable. If I can find my...

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

Got some more done on it today - checked over all the obvious things again (dizzy, carb etc) and put in new spark plugs just to be sure. nothing amiss there; however I did discover why last time i started it it ran hot and smoky, it was, er, (confession time...) the choke cable got pulled when...

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

Having put more thought into overnight, I've realised that, as the pump filter in the sump is completely intact and so must be doing its job plus the external filter was also working and fitted right, then the 'flake' i found in the feeder pipe can't have come from my sump refit. It wasn't...

That was my initial thought but sadly not. If only it has been that simple. Cheers for the idea tho - can often be the simplest things that get overlooked.

Thanks- when I’m next off work I’ll give that a go and get a video if I can. Not sure what the temp gauge was reading - panicked and turned it off quick without looking !

Will try and get hold of an adapter for the pressure gauge that will match the sender hole to check pressure. but how do I check the oils getting through everything ok? If I run it with cover off would I see it flow?

*sorry, long post but wanted to give as much info as possible to aid suggestions * Took the sump off again today as well as the filter and the oil feed pipe. Filter was fine and looked normal and fitted right. Oil pipe seemed blocked - least there was a flake of muck on the top screw which...

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

I’m praying it was something I messed up as hell of a coincidence if not and will save me a lot of hassle sorry to be dumb but did you mean this pipe? If so removal and cranking produces nothing…

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

Everything seemed as oily as normal under the cover but did wonder in earlier post yesterday if I’d arsed up the filter fitting. Not had an issue before but it’s fiddly with that spring and it was the last thing I did and I was knackered by then so could have botched it. Cheers for tip on coil...

Yeah took the rocker cover off first if all and checked all tappets and anything else could see - everything seemed as it should be. Clearances fine. Compression test results same as last year (ie not perfect but not rubbish either and no change since the cloncking started). Been suggested I do...

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

Took it off because a) the seal had always leaked and was a mess of silicone and gunk b) I’d always meant to replace it but never got round to it c) was interested to see the state of the inside of it and d) I’m an idiot. 10 yrs+ good running ruined Don’t have an oil pressure gauge but if I...

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

It sure is nasty! When I had the sump off I did take a good look round - mainly as i'd never seen the engine from that angle before! Took some pics - attached - and I had thought how good it was looking for a 40+ year old engine...all nice a clean and nothing nasty looking. No bits of metal in...

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

I’m no expert but I’d say it was meant to be straight. Hard to see well on mine with all the crap in the way but it seems a straight run to me

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

Considering I just drained all the oil and replaced it, I’d prefer it to have something to do with the oil rather than a coincidental non-related fault. Though I can’t discount anything. If it were a lack of oil feed, what’s the fix? Investigating that first would be preferable to taking the...

@Bobsticle @Hicap phill Audio now on Youtube (what a pain...be great to be able to upload audio files here as easily as pics!)... Will also edit original post. Be good to see what you think - does it confirm suspicion of oil pick up or anywhere else i can look before having to re do the whole sump?

Sounds nasty now - why?? Test your ears..

just trying to get the audio file to play properly - works on my phone but not my computer. will fettle. meantime - 20w50 oil used (same as i usually use), nothing left in sump - carefully checked all tools in and out (and bolts etc). Hoping not to have to remove nicely sealed new sump gasket...

Gents - back for more help… So, as you may have seen from earlier post, I have just had my oil sump off. Changed all the oils, replaced sump - no leaks; all good. Touched nothing else. Test drive and few minutes in this nasty noise appears. Gingerly bring it home. Thought it came from under...

    Oil Sump gasket / sealing

Turns out gasket is paper. The pan is good and flat though and the lip has steel reinforcing plates on it so hopefully with clean surfaces and some hylomar on the gasket I hope to be fine.

    Oil Sump gasket / sealing

Thanks both - I’ll check the sump for straightness today and looks like I’ll use sealant plus gasket. Pretty sure the gasket I got sent was cork but it’s been sat in the garage so long waiting for me to do the job I can’t actually remember.
