    P38A Valve stem oil seals.

I was running 10W/40 which I now realise was totally wrong. Following the advice of the good people on this forum, for the last 3 weeks I have been topping up with a 20W/50, but to date I've only put about 1.5 litres in it. I did think that the consumption had reduced markedly but after the...

    P38A Valve stem oil seals.

Almost 140K now. I was using 10W/40 semi synthetic but following the advice of the good people on this forum I've been topping up with 20W/50 mineral oil, to be honest though I've only put about 1.5 litres of the heavy stuff in to date.

Henry, the plugs are clean and it doesn't smoke so I don't think that the oil is getting into the cylinder, I think that it's running down the stem of the exhaust vave and just being pulled out with the exhaust gases?

    P38A Valve stem oil seals.

Hi Mark, I've only recently fitted a new oil separator insert in the short stubby pipe on the drivers side rocker cover, as the local independents who did the heads and head gaskets for me hadn't fitted one. I thought that fitting the separator insert might reduce the consumption and it probably...

    P38A Valve stem oil seals.

The underside of the car is clean Brian. I had not noticed the oil there before but I can't think where else that it could have come from. Through the week doing about ten miles each way to and from work I hardly notice it using any but at sustained high speeds she does seem to drink a bit.

Advice please. I had the heads done on my Thor engined P38 last year and she hasn't used any water since but the oil consumption is rather high. Despite the oil consumption problem I'm still using it as a daily driver. Anyway last weekend we had a 100 mile round trip up and down the motorway to...

Anyone in leicester with a nanocom please

I have to say that I returned from almost 2 months working overseas to find my battery flat and that after recharging and refitting it my car wouldn't start. I tried for almost 2 days to enter the EKA access code, I even looked at buying a Nanocom (too expensive), phoned several local...

    P38A High Oil Consumption, 4.0 litre V8.

Yes, but it's a Prins VSI set up and is running as sweet as a nut (touch wood), running cost is about 13p/mile in gas and another 1.5p/mile in oil.

Absolutely brilliant Henry, made me laugh out loud. That's probably what happened to mine.

Air flow can do strange things. I have ordered a replacement pipe with the resonators attached. Another weekend working on cars.

Very interesting, thanks for the link. I want a resonator now, I don't suppose anybody has a spare one lying around do they? That probably explains why my car is louder than it should be.

Interesting. Do you have any idea what the purpose of the resonators is? I wonder if I should try and get hold of some? I had a look in the Range Rover workshop manual and can't find any reference to them.

    P38A High Oil Consumption, 4.0 litre V8.

There are two of these on my car Kermit, it's a very late Thor engined car, they look like they are just blanking up some redundant holes in the bottom of the big plastic pipe which goes from the air filter to the throttle body, the holes would be about 30mm in diameter. I thought it was for...

    P38A High Oil Consumption, 4.0 litre V8.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions so far gentlemen. I will start topping up with a thicker oil. As far as I know the engine breathes through those pipes which go from the rocker covers to the air inlet manifold and those pipes are clear. Strange thing last night though, and I don't know if...

If I change to thicker oil do you think the oil consumption will improve?

    P38A High Oil Consumption, 4.0 litre V8.

Okay, thanks Kermit. I think I may have exaggerated the smoke but maybe I should change to a thicker oil?

    P38A High Oil Consumption, 4.0 litre V8.

Hi Kermit, there are no obvious signs of a leak. There is never a drop of oil on the drive where I park it. The smoke under heavy acceleration is blackish but I think that I may be exaggerating slightly as although I can see the smoke in my rear view mirror it's really not that bad.

    P38A High Oil Consumption, 4.0 litre V8.

My daily drive P38 has rather a thirst for oil, using about 3.0litres/1000miles. It drives great and fuel consumption on mixing driving is about 15.4 mpg. I'm currently using a 10W/40 semi synthetic oil but wondered whether I should switch to 15W/40 or maybe something even thicker? There are no...

    P38 Horn or horns?

I just checked the resistance of the near side horn fitted to the car and it measures 0.4 ohms. The replacement measures 2.5 ohms so it would appear I have another problem solved thanks to the good people of this forum. Thanks guys.
