    Diesel fuel pipes ?

What are owners using to replace damaged fuel pipes on their diesels ? I've found the original nylon type pipe that Land Rover used is almost impossible to work with. Apparently you're supposed to heat up the end of the pipe before pushing it onto the union. But when I try it (hot air gun) I...

    Series 3 Snail heater blower

I've got a new "Smiths" heater motor here that I think I bought from Paddocks at some point. Interestingly it seems to be made in China ! You're probably better off reviving your old motor if you can, it's probably better quality

Series 3 New fuel tank in

I fitted one in 2012 I think. Still going strong, but only because I keep squirting old engine oil into the mud traps where the tank mounts to the chassis, especially at the rear

Series 3 New fuel tank in

The original Rover tanks were not just steel - although I'm not exactly sure what the protective coating was. Years ago I thought they were galvanised, but I think Tin plated is more likely as the tank was soldered to the bash plate that came with it. And tin plated obviously much thicker than...

    Seat belts

Just had to Google up the facts. Compulsory to be fitted from 1965 ? onwards (although apparently my 1970 2A doesn't need a centre seat belt), but not compulsory to actually wear them until 1983. I remember that some Del Boy type entrepreneur started selling Puffa type jackets with a black...

Which oil for a 12J Diesel

In the case of the "boat anchor" that I've recently removed, 20/50 with about two litres of used EP90 added to it. Desperate times call for desperate measures

Which oil for a 12J Diesel

Can using a less viscous (thinner) oil cause lower rates of engine wear ? Apparently it can, but I don't quite understand how. Except maybe in extreme cold conditions. Looks like I need to deepen my understanding of how multigrade oils work

My wiring harness is on it's last legs

Extra cost option ? I did have a quick trawl of Ebay for new wiring harnesses, someone has got some Series One items listed £371 a pop. Ouch !

Which oil for a 12J Diesel

I've just fitted a 12J diesel in what seems to be VGC. What oil should I be using to minimise engine wear and make this lump last as long as possible ? I'm not the slightest bit interested in reducing internal friction and getting better fuel mileage, or reducing mechanical noise. I just want...

My wiring harness is on it's last legs

Hmmmm.......Their website claims "Braided Outer Covering " That's a bit naughty if that ain't what they're selling. I know that it's still possible to get the original cotton braided type harnesses, because they still sell them for British motorcycles, and they're new repro items, not NOS...

My wiring harness is on it's last legs

Their website mentions "braided outer covering", is this the same as the cloth covering on the originals ? I'm assuming that all the connectors used are high quality not the cheapo Chinese rubbish.

My wiring harness is on it's last legs

Ik9 Yes, the headlights, dipswich, and rear chassis sections are all add on extras, if I'm reading it correctly. Fair enough. What didn't impress me is their extra charges for upgrades. Like an extra £54 for a harness made to take an ACR type Lucas alternator rather than the standard dynamo...

My wiring harness is on it's last legs

54 years has taken its toll, and either major repairs or replacement is required. Autosparks would seem to be the go to solution, but are they as good as they're made out to be ? Too many times have I been promised a top quality product, only to end up with something barely adequate. Is there...

anyone ever spun over a petrol by hand to measure compression?

This might be totally irrelevant, but apparently the modern way to do a compression check, or rather, a compression comparison between the cylinders, is to simply monitor the starter motor current while cranking the engine. I've just replaced a two and a quarter diesel, and I could actually...

    Parallel heater plugs ?

Many thanks, both of you. I ran into a major **** up when I tried to fit the series type heater plugs into the head on the hybrid 12J engine I was fitting. A trip to a local motor factors yielded supposedly the correct 12mm threaded plugs (actually NGK) which seem to be working OK. Got them...

    Injector Pump leaking Diesel

I've just finished converting a 12J engine to timing chain operation with a vertical injection pump, so it could possibly be one of my threads. Just fitted it over the weekend, it seems to run pretty strong considering the questionable condition of the injectors and pump (mine is dripping from...

    Cylinder head brass plug

Well, I had months to sort this problem out before fitting this engine to my vehicle, but of course I completely forgot about it. Just behind the hole with the brass plug is another hole, a good bit smaller, this is for the heater circuit brass stub. LR used a very fine thread for some reason...

    Cylinder head brass plug

Many thanks for that. It's been many years since I had any dealings with pipework. I spent about nine months welding sprinkler sockets onto steel pipe, but that was about thirty years ago, I've almost forgotten anything I learned.

    Cylinder head brass plug

Hmmmm.........Just been trawling eBay for BSP plugs, the sizes seem to go from 3/4" to 1" with nothing in between, and my plug measures about 21mm across the outside of the threads.

    Cylinder head brass plug

Lots of things changed, and for no apparent good reason. I bought a set of main bearing shells from Paddocks, only the top (block) ones fitted, the lowers were tabbed in the wrong place. Only then I found out that the early engines are different
