Anyone successfully re-cored a Smiths flat heater ?

That's the one. Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know that Emberton did one. And at £302, it's not exactly pocket change (well not on my income anyway), but it's a "good as new" solution to a problem

Anyone successfully re-cored a Smiths flat heater ?

I think that the last appearance of the round heater was 1967. 1968 onwards had the flat heater which I've found a lot better than the round type. Not sure of the claimed heat output, but I think that the round type was rated at 3kW, the flat type 4.5kW. I don't believe those figures for a...

Anyone successfully re-cored a Smiths flat heater ?

I've just bought a used Smiths flat type heater for my next 2A project. All seems well upon first inspection, seems to run OK, seems to hold water OK. Just wondering what the options are if it does leak. Expert repair by a radiator reconditioning company ? I bet that would make a nice hole in...

Restored 1972 Series 2 Diesel not starting

Timing. Just one tooth out on the camshaft sprocket and the engine will simply not fire, no matter where you adjust the pump to. My engine was absolutely dead, slight diesel smoke but wouldn't fire at all. Put the camshaft timing right (one tooth too retarded) and it fired up immediately.

    Charge light on series 3

This thread has just reminded me that I don't have a replacement alternator ready to drop into my daily driver when the inevitable occurs (usually in the worst bit of winter). Present Lucas ACR unit is genuine British made item, but is stuffed full of Chinese made parts - rectifier, regulator...

    S2 pickup

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly that's about 30K + by the time all is finished. I'm just wondering what the Series Two pickup (the OP) will cost to get up to a solid, running reliable daily driver ? OK, so it will never be an "investment grade" vehicle, but I honestly prefer something...

    S2 pickup

I once owned a '59 Series 2 (88") which had been re registered on an "A" plate. Enquiries to discover the original registration led nowhere, despite the date of registration being 1/1/59. Presumably the original reg had been transferred off onto some posh gits luxury car. Best I could get was an...

    S2 pickup

Well done sir ! Too many chassis get scrapped when a few weekends of welding would keep them going for years. BTW, someone has swapped out the Rover type axle for a later Salisbury, and if it's OK, that can only be a good thing.

Looks quite straight and solid. Are the chassis and bulkhead saveable ?

    Oil pressure switch thread ?

Thanks for that. I think that you're probably right. I've been studying various eBay listings and 3/8 BSF is the prime candidate. Other spurious claims suggest 1/8 BSP, but I recall a finer thread than that when I fitted the switch. The V8 is definitely different apparently. I'll do a few...

    Oil pressure switch thread ?

Can someone please tell me what the thread size/form is for the series three type oil pressure switch ? Yeah there's got to be something where I can look this up like a parts catalogue or whatever, but it's been a long day, and I'm too tired to rummage through a pile of paperwork. I want to...

Series 3 front seat retainer brackets part no.331818

Looks very much like them. Note how the corners of the bit that sticks up are rounded off, to stop them from ripping your clothes or the seat squab covers. Now all you need to do is to make some more of them. There are none fitted to my 1970 88, and I don't have a problem with the seat squabs...

Series 3 front seat retainer brackets part no.331818

From memory, they are about 20x20x20 (millimeters) with a 1/4" hole in the middle of the one side which locates on the front seat rail bolt. Maybe a bit smaller, my memory fails me. My 88 should have six of them fitted, but they all seem to have disappeared over the years.

Durability of the 12J engine ?

How durable is the 12J lump compared with the series two and a quarter diesels that I've been running in the past ? Those three bearing things used to wear out at a rate of knots,. I'd fit a decent engine, everything within the wear limits, and 30,000 miles later the thing would be a...

    Double mounts

My best guess is that those outer brackets were added by someone competent in order to support the weight of a overhanging roof rack - the sort that stick out over the bonnet.

    Brake servo on a 2A Diesel ?

Just looked them up. Fitted to quite a few quality vehicles including Mercedes SLK. And not too expensive either

    Centre seat seatbelt

I did actually question why a centre belt wasn't mandatory, which on reflection, was probably asking for trouble, and the testers reply was that, to the best of his knowledge, the only belt you could fit there would be a lap belt, and they were considered to be potentially dangerous, as...

    Centre seat seatbelt

Is your vehicle legally required to have a centre seat belt ? My 1970 88 diesel still has the original belts fitted, and they're only fitted to the OS and NS seats, nothing on the middle seat. TBH I thought that this would mean an MOT fail, but the MOT tester passed it every year.

Metal buried in tyre carcass ?

I'm just wondering. I've got a couple of tubeless type rims kicking around somewhere. Now if I fitted the proper tubeless type valve insert, what if I were to fit my old tube type crossply onto one WITHOUT a tube in it. I'm well familiar with the old petrol/butane gas trick to blow the tyre...

Metal buried in tyre carcass ?

Yeah, one is a Deestone Extra Traction (tubed), and the other is an ancient Olympic Mud Plugger (remould made in Australia)
