Cheers guys, found them in workshop manual too, rectifying situation tonight.

Was feeling pleased with myself for getting stuff back together. BUT I then found these under an oily rag. They must be from around the pistons. Anyone suggest where from? Are they important? Do I need to put them back? HELP!

Cleaned off timing chain, tensioner etc, got a sump gasket, refitted the oil pump thing. Refitted sump to make sure everything was still aligned and put front bit back on. It turns smoothly with a spanner across the dog which gives me some hope.

November seems many months ago! However, getting started again. Piston rings all replaced and any gunk removed. An old tractor/steam engine guy had a look and said everything looked fine to him so I'm ploughing on.

Putting my engine back together and all the manuals make reference to joint washers when putting the blanking plate and fuel pump back on. What are they? I've got the card gaskets but are joint washers something else?

Don't know if these images help but they may shed some light somewhere. Its a '83 ex mil 109. Once I had released all the bolts then it dropped off after a clout with a rubber mallet.

My pictures seem to be disappearing from this thread and I don't know why?? See if this one stays.

Ok, I've cleaned up the chassis, welded bits back on, filled any gaps and squirted nasty stuff inside. I've stripped the springs, cleaned and reassembled. I've stripped the hubs, cleaned and reassembled. I've replaced all brake shoes and cylinders. Where next? Logic suggests brake pipes. Any...

What does your other plate look like. Mine is ex mil but I haven't found any other plates and I've stripped it right down!??

Do not fear, you are not the first to frown at the witchcraft of the axle. After two years I now have all four wheels back on and when I push it, they all go in the same direction!! :rolleyes:

Other front hub cleaned, seals replaced and sorted today. I then loosely attached all the steering gear (as I'd cleaned it up) which made moving it easier.I now have something that is starting to look like a vehicle and is off bricks for the first time in 18 months!!!

Suffolk is probably too far!!

Keep your thread going and keep every picture. I've just started putting my '83 Series 3 109 (ex mil) back together after two years stripping down and the pictures are invaluable.

I just trimmed the wider end of the "front" shoe where it slots into the back of the cylinder. The adjustment pin still locates correctly. When I compared to the shoes which I removed the new ones were marginally longer so the trimming matched them up. Everything seems to still sit correctly and...

Good tip. I did fight with the one I put on and then realised that I had over stretched it. So it may be coming off for a soaking now!
