Maybe coincidence but -40 is the temperature indicated for the outside air temperature on BMW's when the sensor is dead !!!

Nobody has mentioned potential damage to the timing chain..... if it has been rubbing against a screw for some time then i would be worried about it having suffered damage......

I had the same problem couldn't shift the shaft with it supported on wood Bells told me to support it on a brick - it worked !!!
