oil pick up "O" ring or the oil pick up pipe itself either being blocked (by scum thats been disturbed by previous work) or leaking air through the plastic weld.....new pipe and...
Personally dont think its needed and agree with other posts that the VCU is good system and lasts far better on motors used off foad regularly...

Mate is normally fairly competent mechanic with no access to internet has just replaced head gasket on 300tdi (also turbo return hose at same time)...
Get youself a cheap set of steel wheels and 215/80/15 ATS and FL will go most places its bigger rivals can.... If you want to go further then there are plenty of mods available most of which can be knocked up for next to nothing.
Am I missing point....Why fook around with 1.8 when V6 puts out 177bhp in standard spec and with very little arsing around can easily give over 200????
V6 common problem is inlet manifold gasket and can easily lose 1 ltr weekly without any further probs as long as you keep topping up...water goes out of exhaust as steam....looses more on short runs and very little on long runs...
A very small amount of emulsion in filler cap can be expected...

Your FL will float and lose traction before it will need snorkel...ideally snorkel used maily for dusty areas...desert, quarry roads Crewe etc:)
Maybe save your engine if you were to get in too deep though.
