yes diff has to be out to do it, but every one that i have come to replace here has also damaged the carrier when it has broken. With one wheel on the ground the diff isn't rotating - then same on the other side - so it is pointing to diff failure

same as above post - if within the diff it will be the crosspin that has broken. Only "special" tool needed is the box socket or normal socket for the hub nut removal

td5 has auto tensioner for the belts, try going from lock to lock to evacuate the air from the system or failing that use the bleed nipple on the top of the steering box- not with engine running as it is very high pressure, also check your level!!
