Wanted 4.6 V8 Any condition wanted please

Yep, thanks. Have seen them but ebay tends to be a little optimistic on condition I find (especially the last one that wants an engine back as well). Maybe I'm just unrealistic but looking for someone who wants to clear a known dead engine out of the garage in return for some cash. Thanks for...

    What to buy

No worries, keep getting comments about rings, etc. but they agree that the 90 and the AE86 come first.

    What to buy

No, just what feels like a scrapyard. Most of them need serious TLC anyway. Do get some screeching of brakes from the green-laning fraternity that frequently pass by as they stop for a second glance. Perhaps I should start charging! PS Never said better half was my husband...

Wanted 4.6 V8 Any condition wanted please

Long or short Rover V8 engine, dead or alive (just let me know of any known faults please so I can spend time fixing them before finding them for myself!). Must be 4.6 though. Can collect easily from anywhere between Cambridge and Crewe or limited distance from direct line between the two. Thanks.

    What to buy

Sorry, no. To quote from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle-excise-duty/vehicle-excise-duty, the current VED based on CO2 was introduced in 2001 so the facelift models do have a higher tax rate than the pre-facelift, hence one of the reasons I went for a pre-facelift. I know...

    Outriggers renewed or patched?

In theory, yes, depending on how good you are at welding in tight spaces and managing fire risks. Plating might be your best option depending on how much has gone to the rust worms, how good your welding skills are again, how good you can make the finished job look and how friendly your MOT...

All Terrain V's Mud Terrain tyres

AT's everytime. I've had three sets now, each setting last tens of thousands of miles and they've never yet let me down when off-road as well. If you're planning on going into a quarry then okay, MT's might be better, but if it's a bit of sensible off-roading and not serious mud plugging then...

    no drive

Well if the engine runs but there's no connection to the gearbox that would seem to confirm it's the clutch. Only thing that's slightly strange is the amount of black smoke (unless it wasn't smoke and was the clutch plate disintegrating). If it was just the clutch plate the guy replaced I...

black smoke and loss of acceleration

Yes, I agree that they should have. Does that mean you think you've found an honest garage who will not charge you for work that doesn't need doing?! I hope you're right but have the feeling their paperwork will have a clause that allows them to get out of it.

black smoke and loss of acceleration

I'd hate to guess Smokie, sorry. It sounds like the type of problem you could be chasing for some time fixing one thing, then another, then another, etc. If you can find the root problem and fix that first you may get away with less than a couple of thousand (assuming you're going to need new...

black smoke and loss of acceleration

I'd want to plug it in to a computer and make sure it hasn't been tuned. Then check the workings of the sensors controlling the fuelling first (lambda,MAF, etc.), make sure there's no blockage on the air supply side, injectors are correctly sized, etc. A good diagnostic specialist should be...

    What to buy

Don't forget that very few of the Disco 2's were 4.6's (from memory the later Landmarks), also some will have perhaps had 4.6 cranks and con-rods dropped in them so they're not all 4.0's (same capacity as the 3.9's but big structural differences). Also think that post 2001 you may get a...

black smoke and loss of acceleration

Hate to say it but if they're a specialist and you're burning through egr's and injectors I'd be looking for a more specialist specialist! Has it been tuned in it's past life?
  15. M

black smoke and loss of acceleration

Well there'll be a sensor that's causing the tuning to be miles out so the injectors melting are almost certainly a result, not the cause. I'd be looking at Lambdas, MAFs, etc. first and guessing that whatever is wrong is overfuelling the engine. Try a better LR specialist!

    Replacement Gearbox

Surely the whole joy of having a Defender is to have a list of jobs to do that means you can lie outside in the cold and the wet and the dark... Having said that I'm now waiting for the weather to improve before finishing the spray job - might be waiting a long time I guess!

    What to buy

Depends how mechanically minded you are or if you know someone who is and doesn't mind working in return for something you can provide (beer). You will have problems and it will cost you a lot of money and time. Personally I'd go for the V8 with LPG everytime and what you're looking at "looks"...
