It's 2:30am, I have to be up for work shortly, but I had to read this whole thread and put my two penneth in. I've owned my '03 freelander kalahari TD4 for nearly 6months. That doesn't sound like a long time, but when it's your daily drive and your 'lifeline' 6months is long enough to get to...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Well, all seems to be well! I've renewed the diff mount and both rear prop UJ's. I didn't get chance to do thermostat housing as I lost the light. I did have time to inspect it though and I may not need to change it. It appeared to be cracked, but closer inspection says it's ok. The car now...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

If it clears up then it definitely sounds like it's still a seating issue. It's now just a task of finding which one it is! Originally mine was terrible for it, so I left it idling and got a screwdriver placed my ear on the handle and the tip on top of the injector. My number one was silent...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Well if I leave it Idling and don't touch it can be anywhere between about 5 and 10 minutes, just till the engine gets a little bit warm, then it straightens out. Best way to check if you're unsure is to give it a boot full on a cold start up. I know, I know, it's never good to rev a cold...

Well mine is the diesel smell on start up, bluey tinge to the smoke and a slightly rough idle. Clears up when it's warm though.

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Ok, so I managed to find a garage called 'Land Ranger Specialists' up here in atherton. The guy is brilliant, really nice bloke with loads of information, a garage full of landers/rangies and a huge stock of genuine parts. I got 2 UJ's for the back half of the prop (ones gone, the other is...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Ok, well, managed to get the prop off earlier today. I'd been driving the car (with the vibration) and the metallic knocking and clinking became worse day by day. It got to the point where just driving in a straight line sounded like something battering the prop with spanners. After I dropped...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Ok, not had chance to get the prop off yet as work shouted me in again when I was supposed to be off. I've been using it, but not been hammering it. Thing is though, I've been doing some calc's and some thinking and I'm thinking of dropping the prop off and selling the 'lander and getting a...

You don't know how close I am to swapping for a disco. I've always fancied the 3dr 300tdi. One thing that's bugging me about the hippo is that all this 'VCU' talk just seems a bit wet. I'm a little annoyed at how some sticky fluid is A. Governing when and if I get four wheel drive B. now...

Right. Just done a near 20 mile journey and checked the VCU... stone cold... Hmmmmmm. And on second inspections, it looks brand new. The earliest I can get to take the prop off is Friday, so I'll look at the bearings and double check them too. I'll also run it with the prop off for a bit...

Writing to them may be the thing to do. It used to feel tight when I reversed, but after a quick brake inspection it turned out the shoe retaining clips were missing. All four of them, so since sorting those out it's been great. Until this vibration and metal-y clink business. Ah well, I'll...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Well, strangely enough it all looks rather new. No flakey paint really, but then the whole car doesn't feel like it's been used, even at that mileage. It's been serviced well and kept on top of, so I would say that if this sort of thing had cropped up in the past, the previous owner (of which...

Which method? I've read that the 'tip-ex prop' and 'strong arm on the rear wheel' methods are useless.

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Right, well that definitely sheds some light on the situation. I'll drop the prop off and replace the VCU (when I get my hands on £300 that is) and run it 2wd for now. If that saves the IRD then it'll be done! It's an '03 3dr kalahari TD4 with 195k on it. And no, I don't think there is proof...

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Nowhere near unfortunately! With my work schedule at the mo, it'd be near impossible to get there too. What I could do with knowing is; If I drop the prop off and the IRD is buggered, will the signs still be there? If not, is there a sure fire IRD test? I just don't want to go buying a VCU...

Really!? We're there any other symptoms and is it advisable to drop the prop off now before I blow the IRD to bits?

    Suspected IRD problems. Need confirmation

Hi folks, I think I know what the response I will get to this post, but I need to ask. I have read around the forum and things and I'm still unsure. I think I'm having IRD problems, there is a clickey metallic sound when I put it in reverse, but no noises after it's moved a couple of...
