    Do you know any of the history behind the vehicle? Does it sound like it has a misfire? How many miles are on the pump? What colour is the smoke, black? Plenty of other stuff it could be - pull the plugs and have a look to see what they tell you, chances are if this problem has suddenly occurred...

    Go over the whole board with a magnifying glass while it's out as well - saves another joint going after you re-solder the common one. Helps to only operate one window at a time as well, for future reference

    Thats no worry, if there's a fairly continuous black chuff before the turbo spools up fully I'd think the star wheel has seen half or 3 quarters of a turn as well. There is a nylon spacer that goes under the original pin as well, if you want it 100% original - if the previous owner supplied it

    Probably not, check the fip timing isn't out as james suggested first, this is easily done - you can take the inspection plate off of the front timing case cover without removing anything more major if you've already put everything back together.
